Congrats to Rachel Kim!

My time as Pi Sigma's VPPA has come to an end, and now it is time for someone new to hold the position. Luckily, the person replacing me is my twin, Rachel Kim! She is a 3rd year, Business Econ major and is really excited to start planning events for the fall term. Good luck Rachel!!

Samantha Lam Articles: Part II

Today we have another post from Pi Sigma's VP - Community Service, Samantha Lam. Today's article is also from MarketWatch and discusses the J.P. Morgan's extreme $2 billion loss. You can find the article here, and read her discussion on the article under the cut.

Mr. Jamie Dimon, chairman and chief executive of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. looks confused after his company loses an obscene amount of money.

"J.P. Morgan losses are a striking amount for a bank that has recently waived off speculation.  A follow article claims Senator Bob Corker will be seeking a hearing in the wake of J.P. Morgan Chase by the Senate Banking. This is alarming to all taxpayers who may be impacted by the losses. The stock prices are declining, but so are the earnings-per-share estimates. (Another article which can be found here, discusses the possibility of using stress tests to conduct an analysis of whether the institution would be able to survive various scenarios, major losses included. It would be interesting to join these two together.)" - Samantha Lam

Samantha Lam Articles: Part I

Every now and again, there is someone who reaches above and beyond the minimum of what is required of them.

Today, that person is Samantha Lam. Part of the Kappa class and current Vice President of Community Service, Samantha has helped me out with numerous things that she didn't need to help with. She took the initiative and did whatever was asked of her (and even things that were not asked that helped a great deal), especially during Pi Sigma's epic Las Vegas trip.

This time she has submitted to me four articles about interesting topics in economics to feature on the VPPA blog. One post will be posted every day, so stay tuned for more. Today's blog post is about Facebook's future IPO and how investors should take a more critical approach when looking at the huge social networking site.

In this article posted on MarketWatch, Facebook's IPO is further investigated. Read Samantha Lam's commentary below.

"Facebook is widely used by college students and for those who did not know they were opening shares, it would be interesting to note that the caliber of Facebook’s initial public offering, or IPO (the first sale of stock by a company to the public) challenges Google’s IPO. Decisions on purchasing shares should depend on the activity after it prices and begins actual trading, but the simple fact that this organization is now issuing shares is enough to have them sold in a quickness. It is important to note the “red flags” of investing in Facebook, however, which are noted in the article." - Samantha Lam

Scream it From the Rooftops Webinar

A few days ago I "attended" a webinar put on by Delta Sigma Pi's National Office which was about maintaining communication within your own chapter, with your alumni and your host university. There were a lot of good points brought up at this webinar, and under the cut is the e-mail I sent out to re-cap the event to the Pi Sigma Chapter.

Check out my notes to get a better idea of how to maintain contact within your own chapter below!

Send out POSTCARDS to alumni! A nice and personal way to reach out to those who may or may not have lost contact with the chapter

Invite regional and provincial people to ALL of your events. They will be able to help you out with getting the word out about your events since you can't go to everyone's GBMs or send other presidents a bunch of spammy e-mails

When reminding people in the chapter about really important events (a good idea for pledge events), send them an email a week before, a Facebook post 24 hours before, and a text 1 hour before

Send a press release to the local paper (city wide paper), the university paper (even if they don't print it, they can put it on their website)

Send e-mails to MGMT professors so they can send them out to their students!!!!!! Do this with more events than JUST recruitment - take note Director of University Relations; don't spam the professors, but send them the "most important" events. So, recruitment, two professional events, a community service event that occurs ON CAMPUS or a joint-business-club-meeting

Be BFFs with our chapter advisor! He can help us a lot! Eat with him every month!

After an event: send an article to the DELTASIG magazine ([email protected]), post pictures on Facebook and Pinterest, write an article for the Tumblr page, and be sure to tweet about the event!

Have a sign-in sheet when we are hosting events with people who are not just DSP so we can keep in contact with them after the event and see what they liked and did not like about our event(s)
