Baek Yi Hyun is a frustrating, messy and complicated character. He has attributes that make viewers want to root for him, but he overturns his good will through his stubbornness and selfishness. Yi Hyun begins the show espousing the need for civilization and reform to better the lives of those living in a system meant to forever oppress them, which is really what makes us side with him in the beginning (along with his relationship with Yi Kang). This goal of his never really changes, but the way in which he goes about trying to achieve it, changes drastically. In the beginning, he begs Yi Kang to abandon his life of violence, only to pick it up himself. As the plans for his life begin to fall apart, his lofty rules of non-violence quickly dissolve and we see him become ruthless. Although he is a smart person, he ultimately acts like a petulant child when they don't get their way. Yi Hyun is very much symbolic of all capable young people who are kept down by a rigid system, as well as those who feel that the world owes them something more.

What makes him so frustrating is that he is capable of loving and realizing that he is wrong in his actions, but continues to resort to violence to assert his will. Even when he is doing good, he does so by using threats, which shows a weakness in moral character. His need for revenge gets the better of him, and he is unable to stop himself from committing heinous acts. We see him seek death/punishment multiple times, like when he begs Yi Kang to cripple his hand and kill the ogre or even at the end as he waits for Beo Deul to shoot him without moving an inch. He never really tries to save himself. He knows that the ogre needs to die but is too weak to stop him himself. After the massacre that he commits, he is essentially dead inside and goes about living a hollow existence. He goes back to Gobu trying to find life again in the place where he lost all of his humanity, however, all he comes back to are his loved ones rejecting the monster he has become. While I would have liked to see Yi Hyun try and live a reformed life, atoning for his sins, he ultimately did not have the strength of will to do this, and there was always the chance that he would continue harming others when things didn't go his way. Knowing this, the only option was for him to take his own life. Even though he is a horrible person, his last few scenes, especially his final one, are heartbreaking.

Any sympathy that the viewer has for Yi Hyun has less to do with the writing and everything to do with Yoon Shi Yoon's performance. Ysy really has a gift of imbuing humanity into all of the characters he plays. Whether it is lovably manic Enrique; arrogant and lonely Hyun Jae; cold Su Ho and soft Kang Ho who both just yearned for love and acceptance; or frustrated and angry Yi Hyun who lashed out at the world for the perceived wrongs done to him, they all feel very much like real people. The director of Nokdu Flower mentioned that ysy's scripts were always completely covered over with notes, and it's clear that he approaches each character with thoughtfulness and empathy. It is this humanity which makes it believable that these characters could exist outside of the world of their dramas and could inhabit the real world. Yi Hyun is not simply an evil character; he is a portrayed as a deeply flawed human trying, and failing, to find his way. Yoon Shi Yoon did a great job with this character and he made all of Yi Hyun's emotions palpable. I have always enjoyed watching his performances, but watching him in Nokdu Flower was like witnessing his evolution as an actor as he tackled a character like this. I hope he keeps challenging himself and takes more complex roles, because this was fascinating to watch.
