Hitch had once snidely remarked how Annie’s clothes mustn’t smell so fresh if she keeps wearing the same piece every single day. Annie had simply stared blankly at her before walking toward their closet and unveiling the five replicas of the same hoodie she actually owned.

But despite Annie being her complete opposite in personality, fashion sense and views on how best to spend your days off, Hitch supposed that she could live with all of the above. She wouldn’t admit it to anyone, not even to herself, but most of her roommate's odd quirks gradually grew on her.

Annie sighed in relief upon spotting the iron gate that was partly pulled closed, as if not expecting any visitors today. The thought of being with Pieck made her feel better, even if her presence might not have been wanted today. She threw her empty cup in the nearest bin and, taking a deep breath, she stepped into the cemetery, and her feet leading her on to the familiar destination despite having only been there once at the funeral.

And there was Pieck, standing in front of a heap of flowers arranged beautifully around her father’s grave. She didn’t dress up in black; she never did, not even at the funeral. It earned her then disapproving looks from her father’s family members but Pieck hadn’t been in the state of mind to justify herself. Not wearing black didn’t make her any less devastated at her mother’s death, but Annie knew that no one would’ve believed her.

Bertholdt hadn’t seen him in so long that he started wondering if his childhood friend wasn’t a figment of his imagination. For as long as he had been back to his home country, his comrades– his friends– Reiner, Annie and Pieck have been deployed for at least eight months now. The absence of familiar faces upon their arrival was jarring to say the least, but both Bertholdt and Porco were too shaken to register it at first. But after sitting through endless interrogations by officers Bertholdt vaguely recognized and others he didn’t about what happened to them, prodding them for answers about how their mission had gone wrong, and how they were the only ones to make it back, it struck him how, once again, despite him and the younger Galliard having each other’s back, they were still alone even if they stood on familiar soil. Their solitude of seven years crept on them steadily. Suffocating them, threatening to swallow them whole. He tried to convince himself that being home was a far cry better predicament than not knowing if they could make it another day without getting captured or executed or even starving to death. However, the facts were staring him right on the face. Their suffering for the last seven years amounted to nothing because they still came back to a haunted place still. Porco came back to his parents to bear the news of his brother’s death, feeding them rehearsed lies that he died in honor defending their country. And Bertholdt came to a harrowing, empty home, and his father’s cold deathbed. It would’ve been easier, he dwelled, if he had at least a friend who could’ve held him tight, and whispered to him that his endeavors– his losses– weren't for nothing. That going home was worth the blood and tears he shed.
