-sighs- I suppose I should have been prepared to talk about Pierce eventually….
Full name: Serafina DuboisAge: 20 (first introduction)Hair colour: BlackEye colour: BlueHeight: 5’10”Hero?: nopeThough she would later discover she had been born to a wealthy merchant and one of his maids, Serafina’s earliest memories were of the orphanage she had been left at. The only things she could claim as her own where her name and the books she hoarded from the orphanage’s small library. Prone to awkwardness and outright panic in social situations, she spent more time hiding from prospective adopters than speaking with them and was unable to be adopted. Though she would later learn her social stresses came from schizoid disorder and severe social anxiety, the children at the time had much…crueler terms.
She isolated herself further, teaching herself science and maths far beyond the skill expected of her age. By the age of eight, she had written two dissertations though all attempts to publish them were met with angry refusals from scholars far, far older than she was. After a final failed attempt, one of the orphanage’s matrons passed the theses onto an acquaintance of hers: a detective who immediately realized the writer was brilliant. He wrote to her, introducing himself as Jericho and querying her about any subject under the sun. It was a friendship quickly born and maintained for four years before she allowed him to adopt her.
Serafina quickly grew enamored by her caretaker’s work. With each new case, she pushed herself to find a new way of solving them—quicker, more efficiently, and with less risk. Though hesitant at first, Jericho relented and taught her how to fight and how to protect herself. And, in turn, she was given a greater and greater role in his work.
When Serafina was sixteen, her mentor sustained an injury that put an end to the physical aspect of his career. She immediately stepped up to take his place and, eventually, his name. They continue to work together to this day.
Full name: Pierce Aiden MulchAge: mid-20sHair colour: light auburnEye colour: light blueHeight: 5’8”Hero?: unknown (I mean…he could be? But has never shown any signs)
The youngest of the Mulch siblings, Pierce grew up accustomed to the luxury extreme wealth afforded. Not that that helped very much when his twin needed someone to blame her antics on. With siblings who were closer to each other than they would ever be to him and with negligent parents, Pierce often found himself starved for attention, resorting to extravagant lengths to get any acknowledgement he could.
It was through this means he discovered he was, in his opinion, actually very good at telling stories, and through which he first picked up a pen and began writing them down. Unfortunately, what few friends he had were not easily impressed by his newfound hobby. And it was then he learned something that would be crucial to him later in life: money didn’t just buy things, it could buy friends and attention, as well.
By the time he’d reached adulthood and his siblings had abandoned the family, Pierce had gained a job at the Bowerstone Times as a columnist. Unfortunately, he’d also amassed a drinking problem and a gambling debt. And though the debt was eventually paid off (the first and last time Alex was willing to help him out of trouble), the drinking problem remained.
He remains at his job to this day, and, I’m ashamed to say, is still a fan of Meredith Sock. I can neither confirm nor deny if he owns a copy of one of Ilona Pureheart’s books.
