One of my favorite moments in Harry Potter is when Snape tells Dumbledore that he’s raising Harry like a pig for slaughter.
Let’s talk about why.
Here’s some moments that made me feel like Dumbledore was being selfish but also selfless and maybe was using Harry like a pig for slaughter.
1. Dumbledore taking Harry to see Slughorn knowing Harry’s fame would reel him back in.
Selfless because he was getting the information needed to defeat Voldemort by any means. Ultimately, using harry in this moment didn’t directly affect Harry until he was tasked with retrieving Slughorns memory.
Selfish because he didn’t tell Harry about what was happening until a little bit after leaving him clueless and making it mostly Harry’s problem. When he does task him with retrieving Slughorns memory, it leads to many complications like Ron getting poisoned.
2. Harry knew almost nothing about Dumbledore. It’s revealed later on that Dumbledore has a brother and also a sister whom Harry never heard about in the years they spent together.
Selfless because in all honesty, Dumbledores personal life is none of anyone’s business.
Selfish because Harry truly thought he was a friend of Dumbledore but in the end he knew next to nothing about him. I can imagine how hurtful it had to be to discover you know nothing about a man you trusted with your life.
3. Dumbledores decision not to tell Harry just how useful he is in the battle of Hogwarts and the fall of Voldemort.
Selfless because in the end keeping that information helped Harry grow into the hero he needed to be.
Selfish because the lack of information lead Harry to experience more emotional distress and feelings of failure towards himself for not knowing which way to go.
In the end a sacrifice had to be made; One boy or the entire wizarding world?
Dumbledores choices ultimately ended up saving both.
Update: This was my first time making a poll and I wanted to see if it worked, I don’t agree with my vote on Dumbledore using harry, I believe it was for the greater good.
Harry had been groggily trying to tug a t-shirt over his still damp skin; he’d wanted to get to work early. He had a case to break and he was pretty sure it wouldn’t get done without him. He let out a sigh weighing the decision, would a few minutes really hurt? With a groan he dropped himself back in bed and wrapped around Draco. “Fine, but just a few minutes. It’s been crazy at the office recently…”
“It’s been the opposite at the shop. I’ve had no luck with sales.” Of course Potter already knew this already, seeing as they lived together, Harry got the full extent about how everyone always bloody ordered ingrediants from owl sellers and what happened to going into a shop to buy something.
“I think that you buying busy at the office gives you more reason to stay. and. cuddle.” Draco said, nose pressing into Harry’s neck as their arms wound around each other. “Wouldn’t you agree?”
Draco grinned behind his mask from across the ballroom, taking another moment before slowly making his way across to Harry who was standing their looking awkward as all fuck with his masquerade mask on, in his cute dapper suit.
“Can I interest you in a drink, sir?” Draco asked.
The point of the ball was to not be able to pick who the other person was. But when you knew the other person so well nothing would be able to hide them. Harry was that person for Draco, and Draco supposed his blonde hair was a dead giveaway. He might as well play along with the idea though.
“The finest drinks this evening are from our English range, you can find them in the broom cupboard. The drinks have a minty freshness ( something Harry always told Draco he smelt like ) and although come from french ancestory are bred right here in the manor.”
“get up, grumpy. I made the elf cook us breakfast.” Draco said, tugging at the quilt blankets a little bit in an attempt to make Harry get up- before rolling his eyes and turning to the window, flicking his wand to make the curtains pull back and window open. “It’s bacon and poached eggs, with grilled tomato. Your favourite. So shove it.” Draco said, voice seemingly angry but still holding sweet undertones. He did love the Potter, that was no lie.
