Was Snape Actually a Hero? Let’s Break It Down

Okay, real talk—Severus Snape is one of the most debated characters in the entire Harry Potter series. Some people think he’s a tragic, selfless hero. Others think he’s just a bitter man who did one good thing and gets way too much credit for it. Honestly? I’m kind of stuck in the middle.

To get a better handle on it, here are some pros and cons to consider when talking about this potions master:

Snape as a Hero – Pros:

• He risked his life as a double agent: Spying on Voldemort is no small thing. He played a dangerous game for years and never backed out.

• He protected Harry behind the scenes: Even though he disliked him, Snape still kept Harry alive multiple times. That shows serious commitment to the bigger picture.

• He stayed loyal to Dumbledore’s plan: Even when it meant killing Dumbledore himself and ruining his already shaky reputation.

• He didn’t ask for credit: Snape never tried to be seen as a hero. He worked in the shadows and was okay with people hating him if it meant protecting others.

• His story shows real growth: He started on the wrong side, yes—but he changed, and he spent the rest of his life trying to make it right.

Snape as… Not a Hero – Cons:

• He was cruel to students: He bullied Neville, constantly insulted Hermione, and made Harry’s life miserable. That kind of behavior doesn’t just disappear because he did good things elsewhere.

• He held grudges like nobody’s business: A lot of his nastiness came from old resentment and jealousy, especially toward James. He let that influence how he treated Harry and others.

• He was obsessed with Lily, not truly loving: Protecting Harry because he loved Lily is more complicated than selfless.

• He never apologized or made amends: We never see him try to make peace with the people he hurt.

So where does that leave us?

Honestly, I think Snape exists in a gray area—and maybe that’s the point. He’s not a straightforward villain, but he’s not a classic hero either. He’s someone who did real harm and also took real risks to stop something worse. It’s messy. And human.

Hot Take:

Time-Turners Are Magical Genius…

That the Wizarding World Totally Wasted

Okay, let’s talk about Time-Turners—the shiny little hourglass necklaces that could’ve changed everything in the wizarding world… but ended up mostly helping Hermione get to Arithmancy on time.

Iconic? Yes.

Efficient use of world-altering magic?

Not exactly.

Let’s dive into some pros and cons of this magical artifact~

The Pros:

The concept is brilliant.

Time travel in Harry Potter adds depth and suspense, especially in Prisoner of Azkaban, where it’s used in the most perfect “ohhh, that’s what was happening” kind of way.

Hermione using it to juggle twelve classes like a boss? Honestly, academic queen behavior. No notes.

It gave us one of the most satisfying full-circle plot twists in the entire series—when you realize Harry was the mysterious figure who cast the Patronus. Chills, every time.

The cons:

So… the Ministry of Magic has time travel tech and they used it for scheduling? Scheduling? You’ve got dark wizards on the rise, people dying left and right, and no one thought, “Hey, maybe we should rewind a bit and fix this”? Missed opportunity of the century.

Giving a time machine to a 13-year-old, even one as capable as Hermione, is a bold move. Like, “here, child, please don’t rip a hole in the space-time continuum on your way to Divination.”

Then suddenly all Time-Turners are destroyed in a totally offscreen, very “we don’t want to talk about this anymore” kind of way. It’s giving “we didn’t think this through.”

Conclusion:

Time-Turners were magical brilliance that got treated like magical busywork. They could’ve changed history, but instead they changed Hermione’s schedule.

Albus Dumbledore: Selfish or Selfless?

One of my favorite moments in Harry Potter is when Snape tells Dumbledore that he’s raising Harry like a pig for slaughter.

Let’s talk about why.

Here’s some moments that made me feel like Dumbledore was being selfish but also selfless and maybe was using Harry like a pig for slaughter.

1. Dumbledore taking Harry to see Slughorn knowing Harry’s fame would reel him back in.

Selfless because he was getting the information needed to defeat Voldemort by any means. Ultimately, using harry in this moment didn’t directly affect Harry until he was tasked with retrieving Slughorns memory.

Selfish because he didn’t tell Harry about what was happening until a little bit after leaving him clueless and making it mostly Harry’s problem. When he does task him with retrieving Slughorns memory, it leads to many complications like Ron getting poisoned.

2. Harry knew almost nothing about Dumbledore. It’s revealed later on that Dumbledore has a brother and also a sister whom Harry never heard about in the years they spent together.

Selfless because in all honesty, Dumbledores personal life is none of anyone’s business.

Selfish because Harry truly thought he was a friend of Dumbledore but in the end he knew next to nothing about him. I can imagine how hurtful it had to be to discover you know nothing about a man you trusted with your life.

3. Dumbledores decision not to tell Harry just how useful he is in the battle of Hogwarts and the fall of Voldemort.

Selfless because in the end keeping that information helped Harry grow into the hero he needed to be.

Selfish because the lack of information lead Harry to experience more emotional distress and feelings of failure towards himself for not knowing which way to go.

In the end a sacrifice had to be made; One boy or the entire wizarding world?

Dumbledores choices ultimately ended up saving both.

Update: This was my first time making a poll and I wanted to see if it worked, I don’t agree with my vote on Dumbledore using harry, I believe it was for the greater good.

Draco Malfoy: Bully or Misunderstood?

Draco Malfoy is one of my top favorite characters, but not for the reasons you may think.

His character development and childhood story is undeniably one that reel us in. Draco’s history grasps the inner empath of readers which sparks that feeling of sorrow for the blonde haired bully.

Here’s some Draco moments that made us mad, sad, and also feel bad 👇

It’s no secret that Draco Malfoy was not only Harry Potters nemesis, but also a huge bully. But deep down can we blame him?

I’ve gathered all the Draco Malfoy quotes you’ll need to decide so yourself.

Rude:

Draco Malfoy was a cruel and mean bully, but when times got tough he truly understood what it was like to be alone and scared.

Malfoy grew up with abusive parents and no real friends so we can’t really blame the boy for envying the golden trios relationship, but the way he treated them can’t be justified by just that.

When we take into account everything that Malfoy had to experience later on in the story, it’s hard not to feel bad although he was a terrible kid. It’s definitely a hard conclusion to jump to so..
