The few days after he had written his reply are fraught with tension, and it’s a testament to how far he’s come with his temper that he hasn’t snapped at anyone in the office. No matter how hard he tries to think of what he’ll say beforehand, nothing seems to stick, until he finally resigns himself to the unpredictability of it all. There’s a calm curiosity resting beneath the turmoil, though. Harry wonders if Draco will try to hold his position over him. What’s Draco up to now? Will he be able to set our old hostility aside for this? Will I?

The doorbell chimes softly as he enters the cafe, and he feels soothed by the steady sound of conversation. He steps to the counter and orders himself a cup of tea, scanning the place for Draco before checking his watch. He’s five minutes early. While he waits for his drink, he thinks for a moment that he sees a flash of white-blond hair, but he can’t be sure if it’s Draco or not. He bounces slightly on his toes as he waits, hoping the tea will calm his racing heartbeat. He can’t remember the last time he’d dreaded something so much.

Draco noticed Harry through the shop window and watched him for a few moments. He notices the way Harry’s legs bounce and how his thumbs twiddle nervously. Draco’s unable to hold back his smile as he watches, being reminded of school days.

He entered the cafe, heading over to Potters table. “Afternoon, Potter.” He said, Potters fidgeting giving him confidence. “Thank you for joining me.” Draco added, taking a seat without ordering himself a drink - he was hear on business not leisure.

The blonde paused for a moment and tucked a piece of stray hair behind his ear, feeling the awkward aura and deciding to just get straight into it, its not as if either of them had any catching up to do.

“You will be required to make a speech at the start of the event-” Draco said, pulling out a page of notes from his briefcase and sliding them across to Harry. “I’ve mapped out some ideas for you and have a few books listed that you might want to read beforehand.”

Draco definitely didn’t expect a letter back so quickly. And when he opened it, he thought it was going to be a big ‘no’ in bright red ink. But it wasn’t, and an odd little part of him was slightly disappointed.

Stopping what he was doing, he grabbed another piece of paper to write back to Potter, giving him a time and place to meet so they could have a meeting about what would be going on at this GALA event.

As the next few days passed, Draco forced himself to ignore the nervous feeling building about having to meet with Potter. They had talked a handful of times since leaving Hogwarts about 10 years ago. Those times mostly consisted of bumping into each other at a bar giving each other a nod, Granger rolling her eyes behind them, and once they met when Potter decided to bring Draco’s wand back to him, a wand that sat on his shelf at home that had since refused to cooperate with Draco’s magic.

He gathered up what courage he could, grabbing his scarf and wrapping it around his neck along with pulling a thick jacket over his shoulders to fight off the freezing winter of England. Draco let out a deep sigh, stepping out of his small house amongst a muggle neighborhood to meet Potter at the cafe they had chosen.

Draco ran his hands through his hair, well, over his hair - hair that was tightly slicked back against his head like how he wore it when he was a child. He had a black button up on, and over the top of that a emerald green waistcoat and then a cloak with short sleeves - similar to what Severus used to wear.

He sighed, letting his hands drop to the desk as he stared at a piece of paperwork in front of him, willing it to complete itself or vanish and leave him alone. He was a part of a team of underpaid, you could say ‘event organisers’ who took care of the various balls or parties which the ministry held.

The piece of paperwork in front of him was a new event, one that was going to be a joined effort of the ‘Children of War Charity’ and the ministry, had - in bold writing that Draco had been staring at, requested the night to be opened by Harry Potter. And, as Draco read the different pages of paperwork in front of him, it was his job to organise Auror Harry Potter to be there.

Draco slowly reached towards a spare piece of parchment, grabbing his quill with a deep breath and deciding there was no time better than the present - as he began to write.

To Auror Potter,

I’m writing on behalf of the Ministry who is putting together a Ball for the Children of War Charity. This Ball, planned to be on the 27th of May, 2004, has requested your presence to open and close the night. As I’m sure you know, this is a very important event and it would give the C.O.W. great pleasure if you would attend.

“I was hungry.” Draco said, starting to lay back down again, ever so fidgety- on top of Harry, reaching out for his hand and threading their fingers together. “Maybe we should go out for breakfast. One of those cute muggle cafes you keep wanting me to go to.” He said softly, snuggling up under Harry’s chin and beginning to press soft kisses on the side of his neck.

Harry hummed again. “If you keep that up we aren’t leaving this bed.” He murmured, hips rolling up against Draco’s. He couldn’t help it. Any amount of attention was going to arouse him, and Draco had been sitting on him, and touching him, and now he was kissing Harry’s neck and heat was coursing through the former Gryffindor. His breathing was already heavier than normal, and his hands found their way under the shirt and up along Draco’s back.

Draco was about to speak back but any words he was going to say came out in a half gasp, "oh Merlin, Potter. Warn me." He said against the man's neck, giving him a sharper bite against his neck in responce.

"You're awful." He mumbled, obviously not meaning it as he began to let his kisses go on for longer. Kissing downwards to his collarbone, proud as when he pulled away there was a satisfying red mark just below his collar bone.

Draco smiled against his neck, pressing another kiss there before lifting his head back up again. “You’ll look like a hot daddy.” He mumbled softly, finger gently grazing across Harry’s cheek. “Do you think I should follow the family tradition of letting my hair grow out? Or keep it short.”

He pulled away to stretch out, tshirt - which was one of Harry’s - lifting up on his hips.

Harry’s cheeks turned slightly pink and his hands slipped up from Draco’s thighs to his hips as the shirt lifted with his stretching. His breath caught in his throat and he had to swallow down the immense emotion that suddenly threatened to take him over. When he finally answered, his voice was thick with it anyway. “Grow it out. Why not? Reasons don’t have to include tradition.”

As Harry’s hands splayed over his hips he couldn’t stop himself from shuddering, biting on his bottom lip and forcing himself not to turn into a pile of goop under the touches.

“What would you like though?” Draco asked, returning his hands to continue their roaming across Harry’s chest, fingers tracing across the small scars he found there. “I could end up looking too much like my father.” He grimaced, tracing his finger down to Harry’s belly button.

Harry raised his eyebrows. “You want me to come stay with you?” he said. “Oh my, Draco, we haven’t even gone on our first date and you already want me to stay over. How scandalous - what would everyone think?”

He laughed, not realising exactly what he said.

“It’s fine, Malfoy. I’ve been staying with the Weasleys, and once I’m done here, I intend on rebuilding my parents old house and living there. But thank-you, I’ll make sure to take advantage of your offer some time.”

“Ask me on a date sometime then.” Draco said back without thinking, not catching anything of what Harry had said after ‘first date.’ His heart was thumping in his chest, and he couldn’t think of anything other than Harry pulling a disgusted expression and saying something along the lines of ‘I was only joking, what the hell Malfoy?’

His fingers tightened around Harrys had subconsciously.

Harry shook his head. His thumb traced over the flesh of Draco’s hand absentmindedly. “No,” he said. “There were enough bedrooms. My cousin had two rooms. My Aunt and Uncle had their room. They just… hated me. So they put me down in the cupboard under the stairs. They hate magic. They hated my parents. They… they were scared of me, I think. But when I found out I was a wizard, they moved me up to Dudley’s second bedroom.”

He shrugged. As if it were no big deal.

“You probably had like… a third or fourth bedroom, right?”

Draco turned pinker, if that was even possible. “Never mind me.” He said back, “I’m sorry that was -.. that must have been awful.” He said, the bizarre new feeling of sympathy filling him.

“You can come stay at mine.” He said, goosebumps running over his arms as Harrys thumb rubbed against his wrist. He wished he could be braver and do it back.
