Feel free to ignore the question if you think it would destroy The Magic or anything XD but the Marius Ships Matchup has me wondering, how do you pick matches within each round? is it luck of the dice?
No magic at all! I've actually been meaning to make a post about this because i've seen some people saying things like "mods how could you do this matchup to us" or "why would you put them against each other" etc and I don't think people realize that we the mods have not at any point Chosen what pairings go where!
The bracket is built in the same way something like a March Madness basketball bracket is built. Brackets like this basically take the list of all involved teams and, in the simplest of terms for our purposes, put them in order based on how many points they've accrued. In the LMSS this year, we gave ships "points" based on their placement in last year's showdown, based on steal points accrued in last year's showdown, and steal points earned during the Summer of Steal event. These essentially give us information on how popular those ships are in this tournament/in this fandom space right now at the start of the showdown.
The points each ship earned in this way determine where on the starting bracket each ship belongs - for example, Enjolras/Grantaire had the most points so it goes in the #1 slot top left, whereas Cosette/Montparnasse was the last place ship before our vote-in qualifying round, so those two are paired together. The first ship gets paired with the last, the second ship gets paired with the second last, and so on. As I said, no magic here, it's basically just a formula.
You can see the results of the initial bracket seeding below in the first round bracket:
From here, the two winning ships in each section then go up against each other, following the lines of the bracket that you can see above! So, again, we the mods are not deciding what ships go up against each other in each round, it's the bracket! No luck, no dice, no randomization. The bracket is set up based on each ships' earned popularity up to the start of the tournament, and then the bracket goes from there.
I hope that helped answer your question, I apologize if it was a little confusing! I'm happy to explain in more detail if you'd like - I (@glindalesbian) have run a bunch of these bracket tournaments for friends, so at this point I'm so dialed in on how to assemble them I kind of forget this is not information most people are operating with lol.
