Duo Maxwell: Me! ScoundrelCosplay

✨ DUO DAY IS HERE!! ✨ Time to honor this extra incredible, very real, and most prestigious holiday for Duo Maxwell, Greatest of Gundam Pilots... (and good ol' Deathscythe of course).
Honestly, Duo never gets enough credit, but you know what they say: First is the worst... Second is the best... 🎶 Happy 02-02 everyone!
I’ve been having a real hard time with art lately . . . I got so much I’ve drawn but I just never feel confident enough to post them. I truly envy people who can post art regularly but I need to learn to aspire to be more like them and put more of my work out there. Regardless of how much I despise my unfocused art style . . .
I thought this was cool, so I'm making my gundam and I actually have a tiny pilot in the cockpit!!!!!!
I lost the thumb to his left hand for like 3 hours it wasn't until I dropped another piece and went looking for that, smh.
And he's done!!!! It only took me one day, the wings where the hardest part, I kept sticking the parts in wrong. He's my favorite gundam out of the five that are in gundam wing and this is his movie model.
How the hell did you create that beautiful piece of art?? That Maxwell scythe is such a feat of cosplay.
OOooh WHAT?! This is legitimately one of the greatest compliments ever and it was LOST and buried in my tumblr without a notification... I am so beyond sorry about that, but thank you, THANK YOU !!
Duo is (tragically) a little obscure for most people these days, so I don't really get many comments about it, but I'm genuinely so proud of how my scythe turned out and TRULY appreciate this!! I always loved Duo and wanted to cosplay him, but once I dreamed up the scythe prop to carry around, I couldn't get it out of my head and was finally sold on doing it... even if no one else would "get it" haha.
So yeah, thank you so much as this makes me beyond happy to read.
You probably weren't actually curious about the nitty-gritty of the build, but... I'll put some of my madness below the (scythe) cut.
The main secret is I used a piece of custom cut acrylic for the blade. It carries the light in a way that makes it look like it's glowing.
After studying a ton of screencaps (aka: frames of incredibly unhelpful energy smears) and the various gunpla model takes on the scythe, I decided on the shape I wanted... Drew that out as a vector file to size, which I then sent to an acrylic shop to have custom cut (they assured me it was the weirdest order they'd ever received).
Once I got the blade back from them, I attached it to a PVC pipe and covered the top with a sort of... foam sandwich? to create the metal head of the staff. (This was insanely tricky with lots of improvising.) The blade is permanently fixed in there as a result, but the top section of the staff comes off so I can still transport / store the prop safely. Painted and weathered all the "metal" bits and... well, I guess that's pretty much it!
Lots and lots and lots of brainstorming and hours of work went into creating this thing, but I couldn't be happier with how it came out. The way the light carries through the acrylic is just how I'd imagined it-- plus it's all fairly light and durable so I can swing it around like the God of Death deserves...
My cosplay pipe dream is to get the full pilot squad with their matching Gundam weapons made, so if anyone's down, just lemme know ;D But truly, @plainsimplegay thank you again for the wonderful compliment-- I'm so glad there are still some other Duo / Deathscythe fans out there who can enjoy my crazy.
