“Car rides and Broken Hearts”
Hey it’s me, Jen, doing my half of the duo day... sort of. Lauren had me listen to “YOUNGBLOOD” by one her favorite bands ever, 5 Seconds of Summer. I’ve heard a few 5SOS songs here and there, I quite like them but I don’t follow them too closely, which means I kinda had this pre-conceived notion of what to expect, melodramatic songs about broken hearted teenagers. So I tried putting that aside and dived in. As with Lauren, stars indicate that I liked the song.
7. “If Walls Could Talk”*
10. “Why Won’t You Love Me”
When I started listening to this album I didn’t quite know what to expect but what I got was a great album. While the theme of broken-heartedness felt a bit overdone to me it added a sense of relatableness and cohesiveness to the album. I appreciate this cohesiveness not only lyrically but also in the sound of the album. While each song is presented with different vibes and sounds to them, there’s also a consistent drum, guitar, and synth throughout the album that gives it that distinct 5SOS flair while providing a song to fit the style of every kind of music listener. Whether it’s in terms of lyrics or in the albums musicality there is something for everyone. Also “Ghost of You” made me cry so thanks for that.
I had this awesome piece written up with my thoughts on each song as I was listening to them written but then I accidentally deleted it and I figure this was better than nothing :/ so I’m really sorry for that but now it’s 3:48 am and I have to be up in 2 hours :)
