Soul knew he was dreaming when a gentle pressure settling over his hips drew him from the darkness. Through sleep-leadened eyes, he could make out the form of Maka, positively divine bathed in the early morning light flooding through her window, hovering over him, green eyes muted and unreadable, a small smile pulling the corners of her pink lips up ever so slightly. He was probably going to Hell for being depraved and desperate enough to conjure up this kind of dream about his best friend, but fuck it all of he wasn’t going to enjoy it while it lasted.
Dream-Maka leaned forward slowly, a steady, small hand over his chest sending his heart racing beneath her touch, until her forehead rested against his. He could lose himself in the never ending depths of those green eyes and the galaxies of unknown emotions that swirled listlessly within them.
“Good morning sleepy head.” Dream-Maka, much like the real life version, was definitely tone deaf, but her morning sing-song voice, thick with sleep and what Soul could only dream to be adoration, responded like an angelic choir in Soul’s ears.
“Mornin’.” the words felt heavy on his tongue, though whether it was from sleep or the smell of Dream-Maka’s conditioner fogging up his head, Soul really couldn’t tell.
There was something brewing behind the green of her eyes, something resembling mischievousness that made a vibrant pink blush color her cheeks while she nibbled on her bottom lip.
“You know,” she started, no stutter in her voice, but a new traitorous shade of red creeping up her skin betraying her nerves, “I still want that kiss.”
Oh yeah, he was definitely going to Hell for this. Might as well make the eternal damnation worth it.
“Come her and get it then.”
She hovered for a moment, and he could feel an anxious shiver crawl up her spine. Then her wide eyes fluttered shut and slowly tilted her head down.
Her lips were chapped, and her morning breath sat so ugly on his palette, but god damn, he’d wanted this too badly to care. Dream-Maka was the closest Soul would ever get to the real thing, and fuck him if he was going to bitch about details.
She had one hand planted by his head supporting her weight while the other was busy tangling itself into locks of messy white hair. Soul let his hands wander to her hips, where her night shirt had ridden up to expose a holy land of silly skin.
Kissing Dream-Maka was a reverie worth drawing out, and Soul was more than happy to take his time exploring. His hands traveled slowly, tracing the notches in the arch of her back, down to her hips to float over the outline of her underwear, and down to her creamy legs that went on for days. Her fingers followed the curve of his jaw almost teasingly, feather light touches leaving trails of fire in their wake.
And just when Soul thought he could finally die happy, Dream-Maka rolled her hips forward, a movement undercernable if done by accident or on purpose, and all coherent thought flew out the window.
In a panic, Soul forced her away, heart pumping furiously in his chest. Those green eyes stared down at him in confusion, tinged by the pain of rejection.
“What’s wrong?” She was shrinking back, an age old anxiety rising up in her voice. She moved to slide off his hips when his hands shit out to still her.
“Pinch me.”
“What?”
“I’m dreaming, right? Pinch me. I can’t cross that line in my head. In already going to Hell for this. Pinch me.”
Dream-Maka’s face went blank for a long moment, what seemed like eons as Soul’s heart fought to break free of his ribcage, and then she broke out fucking laughing.
“Oh– oh my god!” she gasped between fits of giggles. “Is that what you think?” she doubled over, clutching at her sides while laughter bubbles from her lips. Soul could feel a queasy out settling in his stomach, his face growing hotter the longer she fought for breath.
“Oh Soul,” she finally managed, wiping a stray tear that rolled down her cheek. She punched his heated cheeks with an amused smirk. “You’re not dreaming.”
“But– you– we– what?!” His stomach flipped, knocking his still pounding heart into his throat.
Mama shimmied her way off his hips and onto the floor, prancing to the bedroom door with a spring in her step. “I’m going to brush my teeth. You might want to consider doing the same. Your breath reeks.”
She disappeared down the hallway, leaving Soul to reel in his jumbled thoughts and try to understand what happened. It wasn’t until her discordant humming floated from the bathroom that he regained control.
He turned into his pillow and screamed every curse he knew.
