Pindas: herbal bags for massage
A couple weeks ago I shared with you how to make herbal baths for different kinds of pain. And while they are some of the best ways to use plants to soothe aches, it doesn’t mean it’s the only one.
Not everyone has access to a bathtub or even a short soak for feet or hands, but thankfully, that’s what the bags that appear in the image are for.
I’ll be honest and admit that I don’t know the name for them in English, but I’ll name them pindas for the time being (if anyone does, please tell me). People who go to spas might be familiar with them, seeing that they are widely used for relaxing and comforting massages mixed with aromatherapy.
How do you make them? It’s very easy. Take a circle (depending on the size you want, it can be 30 cm in diameter to fifty) of fabric. The fabric should be a natural fiber one, to help with the distribution of heat and soft, because it will be directly in contact with the skin. Personally, I love flannel. The fun part is filling it with plants, I’ll put a couple lists in a bit, of plants that can be used for them depending of the effect you want. Then you tie it tightly and make a round ball, and with the excess of fabric, tie it with a ribbon until you have a handle to take them. Very easy.
How do we use them? Well, this is the tricky part. You can warm them up in a steam cooker or in the microwave. Personally, what I do is improvise a steam cooker with a pot and a heat safe plate over which I place the pinda without touching the water. If you use the microwave, be careful they don’t burn.
Once you have them ready and warm, they will start releasing their scents into the room. That’s when the actives start to work. If you will use them on your legs, arms, shoulders, neck, tummy or face, you can start by taking them by the handle and gently patting them on your skin. While it’s not necessary, I recommend you apply either massage oil or a moisturizer on the part where you are going to use them to avoid accidental burning. Every so often (two or three complete “passes”) let the pinda aside and pass your hand over the skin, to dissipate the sweat that is generating. That bit is what can cause a bad burn. Keep patting until the pinda is cold or coldish and then set it aside. Tap your skin gently with the tips of your fingers and clean your skin with a towel of necessary.
For the back it’s a little harder since you’ll need another person to use the pindas on you. The person who gives the massage should already have the back uncovered (this can be done either face down on a bed or sitting comfortably) and apply a good amount of massage oil or moisturizer to avoid burning. Same thing, Pat gently on the the skin, avoiding the spine (it can be very sensitive) and the edge of the shoulder blades. At every pass (when you finish patting all the back), let the pinda aside and pass your hands or forearms gently over the skin to dissipate the sweat. Repeat until the pinda is cold and pat the skin gently with the tips of your fingers. Clean the excess oil with a towel.
If you are not squeamish, pindas can be used twice, on the same person, during two days. After that you should throw them away before they start getting mold. If you don’t want to, my recommendation is to use the contents of the pinda and make a strong tea (submerge it in boiling water (5 liters) and keep it there for about five minutes). You can use this tea to rinse at the end of a shower to soothe the pain of to relax.
Now the interesting bits, what can we use pindas for (use half a cup or a handful of each ingredient in the pinda.)
🌼 For pain: Arnica, Rosemary and Eucalyptus
🌼 Pet safe for pain: Rosemary, Melissa and chamomile.
🌼 Relaxing: mint, chamomile, green tea and juniper berries (for the pet safe version, just avoid the juniper berries)
🌼 Skin care: Rose petals, chamomile and green tea (pet safe)
🌼 Recovery from sickness: orange leaf, mint, peppermint, lemon skin. (Sadly, no pet safe version that I know of this one, sorry.)
Those are some of the most basic recipes I can think of, but if I find or experiment with any other, I’ll write about them. Be safe and whatever doubt you might have, I’m always open to answer.
