Everyone I’ve ever known with an LotR-inspired name was born in the 70s. Was it a thing, I wonder? Or did everyone just get boring by the time the 80s came along?

Me neither. And I have the worst assignment ever that I really do need to get back soon.

The good news is, most of the kids didn’t do their work! So the time spent grading is less than it could’ve been...

The bad news is, of course, that most of the kids didn’t do their work, so I’m emailing them and will spend some of 3rd period yelling at them. Le sigh.

Considering a Missing Work contest - the class with the least missing work at the end of each quarter gets a cake. It will increase my grading, but hopefully decrease my stress?

What assignment are you dreading?

I can only assume you guys want more gentle midwestern tourists :D And/or more gun violence, because we’re pretty good at that.

My response upon seeing this every time was "how are they original, they are called NEW York for crying out loud!". *Cue people at bus stop turning their heads and staring at me*

LOL! I do think the cops who were sitting in their car next to the ad were confused that I stopped to snap a picture of it.

I think the Famous Original thing is meant to reference the Famous Ray’s/Original Ray’s rivalry but the font doesn’t really fit either of their logos...and in fact just reminds me of the Harold’s Chicken Shack font.

I'm baffled by what the 'W' is supposed to convey? It looks to me like crossing vehicle headlight beams, but...that's not super New Yorky, unless you count cabs, in which it should, idk, be yellow with a black-checked stripe? I'm so confused. And angry on your behalf that somebody thought Chicago would be okay with this.

I thought it was a dude yelling, like New York IS kind of famous for dudes just yelling randomly.

FWIW, I’m not from Chicago but I’m in the city visiting for the first time, and I was also appalled to see that as yesterday.

Have you seen the more baffling but less appalling ads for Lexington, KY in Chicago yet? I’m still confused about those, but at least we don’t have a notorious rivalry with Lexington.

I just had to laugh--I've been re-reading the third year of Stealing Harry, and there's the scene where Lupin is hunting through his boxes for his old notes so he can plan his classes. I'm just starting my first year as a faculty member, and about the same time I was reading that, I was tearing around looking through our still-unpacked boxes for my old notes so that I could write lectures. So A+ realism for new faculty, there.

Yeah that scene was DEFINITELY NOT drawn from me doing similar to prepare for a class I was teaching in grad school. :D

I’m sorry, you know it but I can’t not say it, I’ve seen the results (showed up as ads on my Facebook) and as far as “ancestry” it’s complete junk. Like, not just unreliable, but chromosomal results that are honestly impossible and I use them in class for my genetics students to explain how the result couldn’t be right. For the other traits and health stuff they may be better.

See I knew it was bad science but I didn’t know it was that bad. Definitely still a waste of money though.

To be fair, a lot of the people teaching right now have never taught or even taken an online class. Among the folks I know there’s a lot of discussion, but none of us have the expertise, and a summer wasn’t long enough to get it.     

That is true. It has been a nightmare mess on the elementary level so I imagine its like that all the way up. I think she’s taught this one online before. It’s most likely that she’s not the kind of person who is distressed by basically cold-emailing your classmates to be in your group when none of you know each other. I can’t imagine being that kind of person but I’ve heard they exist.

Ahaha oh noooo! I mean...it should be slightly less pressure with grad school than undergrad? Maybe?

Grad students do tend to be more focused on other things going on in their lives. At least the ones I’ve been around. And it has been a while since I’ve had to defensively explain that I do not care enough about sports to care about this.They have stopped setting trash cans on fire in the street for the most part. So that’s something
