"Don’t tell me I didn’t see that!"
" Ah -- hey, hey! Calm down, okay? Geez, um -- I'm sorry, all right, I didn't mean to ... to upset you, or anything, it's just, er. We're trained to handle this sort of thing with some level of scrutiny, you know what I mean? -- Uh ... "
Adachi is starting to think that he's just a joke, here. Starting to feel like maybe his higher ups just take one brief look at the people walking into the station, and decide, ' yeah, this person can't be taken seriously, ' and instantly label them as riffraff to be discerned to him. Sure, he's purposely given them the idea that he's a little incompetent, but really now. He isn't so bad that he has to sit here and talk about ... whatever monster thing this kid was talking about.
But it's because he got that one woman riled up, the one with the missing kid back out in Miyagi, that he's here right now. It's because he had told her that crying wasn't going to bring her son back that he was stuck out here in the sticks. Stupid. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Here he is, repeating the very same mistake he'd made in his younger days. He's not sure where they can possibly transfer him that would be worse than here, but he's not sure he wants to find out.
Clearing his throat, he puts on the most cheerful little smile that he can manage, and he resituates himself, setting his pen to the paper again. " All right. Let's, uh, start from the top, right? Tell me again -- where were you at, and what time was it? "
