this made me very upset to know that something like that have happen to my home province of Quebec.

I have close ties with Quebec as well, which is why the news of the shooting really hit hard. The province has had a controversial relationship with Islam in the past, but overall I’ve always seen it as a rather peaceful place for all. Hearing about the massacre was heartbraking.

Isn't it too early to really claim this was a racial issue? We don't even know the perpetrators yet.

There has been some preliminary information about the shooters surfacing throughout the day.

I wouldn’t call this a racial issue per se, but rather a religious/cultural one. I do think that the choice of the location of the shooting wasn’t random and suggests a clear anti-Muslim bias on the part of the attacker(s). The victims were targeted for their beliefs. I also do not believe that the timing of the massacre was accidental. It happened right after Trump instated the ban on migrants from countries, where Islam is the dominant faith, and after the Canadian government responded by reiterating their open door policy. The shooting seems to be a reaction to one or both of these events. Either way, Trump’s presidency, with all of its accompanying scapegoating and hate speech, has made certain people with xenophobic views a lot more brazen. They’re no longer afraid of expressing their prejudices in public, which might mean that some will be willing to act on those prejudgements as well.
