i cannot in good conscience do the looks like/is chart with satoshi (100+ pkmn,,,,,) so have it for martin & charles respectively <3
charles has been on pokémon!strictly as both celebrity contestant & guest judge
touching back a lil on yday's pokéball talk.. martin usually gives his pokéballs a lil toss before sending them out in an underhand, like skipping a stone. in the rare event that charles sends out a pokémon in a competitive/battle capacity, or if he's sending his liepard out as the phantom, he gives his pokéball a lil kissy before gently backhanding it.
hanzou's pachirisu is always out & about, his only registered pokémon, its being sent into a pokéball entirely utilitarian, to save it from a fall he can't reach or protect it immediately after it's fainted.
charles typically keeps his primary quartet of cats in their pokéballs, but quartz, topez, & garnet are always out when at home or his interpol office, both locations fitted out with landings & scratch posts for any of the lot. amethyst only gets let out when he's home without personnel or on a job as the phantom. the other dozen cats all lounge around his wyndon manor, only sent to their pokéballs when being transferred to a villa in another region due to charles staying there longer than a few weeks.
martin tends to keep umbreon out, as much a partner in travels as a battle ace, with the rest typically getting to flex their legs in non-battle contexts during mealtimes on the road.
hibiki doesn't keep any of his pokémon out, with the technical exception of porygon in his phone as opposed to the more classic rotom, though he does have a rotom as well. the rest of the pokémon he has were "inherited" from professor akero, & they still do not like his ass, so he keeps them tucked away as much as possible, even at the lab.
bc i cant stop thinking abt the cats, charles vc you seem nice but do my cats like you
quartz, his skitty, is the easiest to appeal to, she leaps at any opportunity to get skritches, readily approaching beckoning hands & hopping into open laps, but she scratches like a hellion if made to stay put.
topaz is, by nature of being an alolan meowth, a lot more choosy, but if spoiled rotten will show her approval by bumping her head against someone's hand, though she'll otherwise be aloof as ever.
garnet, his espeon, will spend majority of his time around humans other than charles just staring at them from wherever he's perched or laying around, the ultimate sign of approval being him taking an actual nap around others.
his liepard, amethyst, is only ever encountered by those that charles works with under the guise of the phantom, thus very few ever earn her approval, but she has shown it to a small handful, walking ahead of them instead of stalking behind.
anything less than a positive attitude is seen as a red flag & charles will be spiteful to the ends of the earth about it.
if someone takes to the cats especially easy, you are now one of charles' favorite people ever & he will let you know that for as long as this remains true.
besides the quartet that charles regularly has in his roster (skitty, alolan meowth, espeon, liepard) he does have at least a dozen other cat pokemon living in his primary manor in wyndon. they have a trusted & well compensated cat-sitter when he has to leave galar for more than a day, & since they're all caught & registered he has them transferred to one of his villas if he's staying in another region for a month or so. they're all named after gemstones. charles would burn a person alive for them.
once upon a time, for a solid 10 seconds, i thought "haha charles would never wind up working for a criminal team (let alone rocket) because he doesn't "do" large-scale crime & also what could anyone possibly—" & then i remembered that, if anyone finds out charles is the phantom, he's going to lose all his accustomed comforts & go to jail probably for the rest of his life due to the accumulative sentences of all his thefts, forgeries, & money laundering in the past 20+ years... he's a prideful bitch, but it's because of that pride that he'd probably cede to any blackmail anyway. he'd spend his spare time trying to figure out how to work around the blackmail & make it worthless ammunition, but point stands that he's not immune to giving into such things.
charles doesn't really follow the battling world, although he has of course followed the careers of galar's champions, out of homeregion pride if not out of true interest. though most battles rarely catch his eye, champion leon's battles have always caught charles' attention, inspiring a sense of awe about competitive battling that nigh no other battler has managed for him. the only battlers who have truly come close to the same have been kalos' diantha & hoenn's wallace. it should come as no surprise with all this in mind that what charles truly pays attention to are pokémon coordinators & performers, far more preferring the duels of creativity & dazzlement to the brute strength battles that overwhelmingly dominate the battling world. he himself has still never competed in a contest. he'd like to someday, though, should the opportunity present itself.
