Hey I just wanted to let you know that the sombra cosplay is brown face. The cosplayer is actually fairly light complected
Aw, what? Darn, it looked so good too. I’m always torn when it comes to racial politics in South Korea, because I’m actually not sure how well people know what is or isn’t considered offensive there, in a racial sense.
In fact, I just googled this, and Pion Kim has written up her thoughts. As I suspected, she did not know about how skin tone makeup can be offensive or hurtful, but someone has engaged her in respectful dialogue, and she has promised not to use skin tone makeup again because it was never her intention to hurt anyone.
Just in general, please understand that racial politics differ from country to country. It is often harmful to apply American or westernized ideas about race to other countries, as they might have a completely different sense or understanding. Korea is still a recently globalizing country. People still stare at foreigners on the street because they are an unusual sight. Heck, foreigners on Korean TV are still so rare that they recruited for kdrama side characters at my high school (although that may also just be because a lot of people in the entertainment industry had children going to my school; international schools, woo). We’re still trying to understand how to be respectful of people who are non-Asian.
I don’t mean give Korean people a free pass when it comes to this stuff, but when correcting people, please keep in mind that someone may have grown up in an environment with a different sense of what is socially appropriate and a different idea of race in general.
