Birch polypore (Piptoporus betulinus)

Hoping to show here the rough progression of this mushroom, which starts  as  a sort of bulbous growth, which extends on a short pseudo-stipe  and flattens into a shelf which can be up to 30cm across.

A particularly pleasing old specimen of the tough birch polypore, long past the days when it is just emerging and makes a passable poor man’s edible.

Meget almindelig svamp på syg eller død birketræer (Betula). Kendes, udover på dens voksested, på den glatte, ofte lys læderbrune overflade ogt rundede kant.

Birkeporesvampen bliver op til omkring 20 cm. i diameter og kan blive temmelig tyk, omend den ofte har den flade sorm, som ses på billederne her. Forekommer hele året; men særligt september til start november er et godt tidspumkt at kigge efter denne svamp.

Birch Bracket Mushroom (Piptoporus betulinus)

A very common mushroom on sick or dead Birch (Betula). Besides its choice in host, it is identified by its smooth, light leather-brown surface and the rounded edges.

The Birch Bracket grows to about 20 cm. in diameter and can be rather thick as well, though often it will take the form seen in these photos. Is found throughout the year, though from August till early November is an especially good time to look for this mushroom.
