“Founded in London in 2010 and now based in 263 cities around the world, Sofar Sounds is a global network of artists, hosts, and guests, all with the goal of bringing the magic back to live music. A Sofar is an intimate event where the best new (upcoming) artists perform in unique spaces to an audience of music lovers.

A Sofar will typically feature three acts, no “opener” and no “headliner”. Every lineup is carefully curated to give the audience a diverse show, and each performer is given equal attention. Guests arrive on time for the first act and stay for the entire show. Events are normally BYOB, so there’s no waiting at the bar. And during the music, there is full attention: no talking, texting, or filming. Many of our cities have a video crew who records and edits the performances so you can watch them later on our YouTube channel. You can also buy our artists’ merchandise, follow them on social media, and spread the word. Join us in supporting great new music!

On Wednesday July 20th, 2016 our latest adventure took us out to the city of Santa Monica, California to a previously undisclosed location to attend our first Sofar Sounds L.A. musical event. Our introduction to Sofar Sounds came through filmed performances of bands that are favorites of ours. Sofar’s video for Cutty Flam’s “Sugga” was the performance that introduced me to this global artist network. The video that hooked me join to Sofar was Brainstory bands ( @brainstory ) “A Wonderful Why.”  In the video Eric the drummer for Brainstory discards his drumsticks and turns his drum set in to bongos during the break in “A Wonderful Why,” which was a fantastic feat to watch, and made me wish I was there. But the band that made us want to attend one of these events was none other than our favorite Prom Punkers, the Cutty Flam Band. Sofar Sounds holds secret events and musical acts that are not announced until night of the concert. If you are lucky like us and follow bands that share on how to get into their secret shows it is awesome. Cutty Flam band was also the resident band for Sofar Sounds Los Angeles during the month of July in 2016. I ended up applying for two dates in the month of July, we were invited to attend the July 20th concert.

Arriving to the location we discovered the show would be taking place at a prepossessing three-story home located in a residential neighborhood in the Santa Monica area. Once inside the space we learned the other two artist performing along with Cutty Flam would be the fuzz-folk stylings of Sarah Negahdari (Pisces Sound) and Mexican pop singer Fernanda Ulibarri. We quickly reaped the perks of attending this intimate concert when we found some prime real estate right in front.

After a short introduction and some words by the Sofar host our first act Sarah Negahdari took to the stage and introduced herself as she plugged in her guitar and tuned it. This would be our first time partaking in Sarah’s rock infused productions. Playing about four songs that night the cutely coy musician spoke soft but sang and strummed with a voracious zeal.

Next on stage was Mexican Pop singer Fernanda Ulibarri. Fernanda came accompanied with her Autoharp and a violinist to back her melodic sounds. For a song titled “Carro” Fernanda shared the meaning and a little story about before playing engaging the audience. Along with that composition she also sang a track from her ‘Polkas de Amor’ EP and another song titled “Crush.” The tune that won me over was her superb rendition of Johnny Cash’s, “Ring of Fire.” Which had me foot stomping with Fernanda all the way through.

After Fernanda’s performance we were given a brief intermission to stretch our legs, talk and let the next act set up. Which happened to be the sharpest dressed crew in the land of "El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles del Río de Porciúncula," yes folks the Cutty Flam band. They were also the band @xicanagradstudent and I had been anticipating to watch since receiving our Sofar invitation a week prior.  While the band set up were were able to chat with Cutty (Vocals/Guitar), and Chewy Lewy (Bass) who's birthday coincided with the event. The audience had an impromptu staging belting out a Happy Birthday tune to Chewy preceding the bands commencement.

The resident band of the month of July for Sofar LA started off with a couple of Rockin’ tunes that were not included on their ‘Robot Heart’ album. One of which we had previously seen them perform. Which I am in search for our music collection. Cutty Flam performed favorites like “Sugga,” Cutty coaxed the crowd to get up and dance to this one, and “Robot Heart” which happened to be my favorite song executed by the band on this night. We also reveled in the bands vivacious stage presence with Cutty stepping out doing a little guitar strutting, to Bang Bangs dynamic percussion modus operandi. Chewy Lewy too stepped up and graced us with some of his “Punk Funk” skills. Truly a special Cutty Flam set. Bravo Sofar LA.
