I’ve got a real problem with movements like “Piss for Equality”, “Make leftists think this is a nazi symbol”, etc. movements.
(side-note: there’s significant reason to think that much of the success of piss for equality was falsified, such as the attached picture being fake)
It’s fucking stupid.
“I mean, let’s photoshop something into arguably the most well-known nazi symbol and then mock people who think it might be connected to modern nazis.”
The largest, and worst, part of these “let’s get X to do Y” things is that X group can be guaranteed to not know it’s supposed to be mockery. Jokes and satires only work if you know it’s satire.
But this is the internet; eventually any and all original context is going to be stripped and then you’re left with the basic image and it’s lowest level of symbolism.
It’s like “telephone”, except instead of a classroom of 30 you have hundreds of millions of people involved. Thinking the context is going to remain is asinine, at which point it just becomes a matter of “hey, do you think this will eventually get taken seriously by someone, who then will tell other people it’s serious?”
Yeah. Someone’s eventually going to think it’s sincere because the internet doesn’t keep track of irony and shit. Poe’s Law is a real thing for a good reason.
Turning something into a “gotcha” after (purposefully) removing all context from it that would denote it being satire doesn’t make you clever. It just makes you the douchebag in school who started rumors and reveled when people were harmed by them.
