Pistis Ekphrasis Chapter 2: Pelagia

Pelagia - of the sea.

Excerpt from a book titled Perse: Loyalty, Protection, and Victory:

In the Hesiodic account of the Athenide's birth, Arsinoe speaks of her boon companion, Perse. This name is attested to in other myths related to the Athenide, although no references to it can be found in any other Hellenistic corpus.  The only description we have of Perse’s heritage comes from Arsinoe’s account, with the epithet Salacione (“Daughter of Salacia”) bestowed upon her. As the name Salacia belongs to the Roman goddess of the sea, scholars have argued that this myth is an explanation of Magna Graecia1, justifying later Greek colonization efforts in what is now the Italian peninsula.  Arsinoe is also the source of Perse’s most well-known epithet, Pistos (“Faith”). Pseudo-Apollodorus claims the Athenide’s domain of trust to be one and the same, both serving as an aegis upon the polis.

💥 What is one canon thing that you wish you could change?

I'd change a lot of things in canon, but if I had to pick just one (that isn't the scope of "please rehaul Luke's characterization from the beginning for some book-to-book consistency" or "Please flesh out the Athena Cabin I am begging on my hands and knees" lol) it'd be someone coming to help take care of May Castellan/give her closure. She really just go left alone in that house! Can she at least make it out of the fridge .·°՞(¯□¯)՞°·.

🦈 Which character is the toughest to write?

Much to my surprise, Leo Valdez was the hardest character I've ever written in the PJO fandom! It's unpublished right now but he has a chapter in my Athenide fic (Pistis Ekphrasis), and I rewrote that 3-4 times. He just doesn't really speak to me as a character so I had to re-read his parts in the books to get a new perspective.

🎨 If someone were to make fanart of your work, what fic or scene would you hope to see?

I'd love to see fanart of Athenide fic, Pistis Ekphrasis! I don't want to spoil my own fic, but there are scenes with Annabeth as Arsinoe, along with the gods [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] which I would explode from sheer happiness if I saw fanart of. (One of said chapters I think you'll really like, although who knows when it'll be published 😅.) I think a particularly fanart worthy scene will be popping up in the next 2 chapters!

The plaque for the Louvre's newest exhibit, Princesse de la Mer, reads:

This statue was found on the island of Melos. Much like her companion, Venus de Milo, the Princess is missing her arms. Without her symbols of power, archaeologists struggled to determine if this statue depicted Arsinoe or Perse. However, most now agree that the statue is Perse, the goddess of loyalty, heroism, riptides, and maritime navigation. The first hint is her crown. The Princess is adorned with a headpiece shaped like crab claws, reminiscent of Amphitrite. Most depictions of Perse are visually similar to Salacia (Amphitrite's Roman counterpart), differentiated only by the sword she carries. In contrast, most depictions of Arsinoe, including her statue on the Acropolis, are crownless. The second hint is the net tied to her waist. Perse was also a psychopomp, known to ferry the souls of those lost at sea to the Underworld in her golden net. The Princess's net is filled with treasures, including coins, corals, and sea snail shells, which were most famously used to make Tyrian purple dye. Perse was particularly worshipped in Tyre, the city where the dye was made, and so many speculate that this statue was commissioned by merchants hoping to share in its wealth.
