Hi! That question you just answered reminded me that you are a college professor so I have another question for you. What is the appropriate route to follow to report flagrantly unfair grading, and how likely is it to be addressed when the teacher is in his 70s, the head of his department, and very tenured. He took 40% off my friend's essay because the school printer left an ink spot, then he told her she could cover it with whiteout, and he took the points off again from her next paper. :o
Oh goodness! That’s crazy. I’m sorry to hear that. Whether your friend’s grievance is addressed or ignored will have a lot to do with the specific rules of your college, but it is possible it won’t go her way thanks to the issue of tenure and his being the chair, as unfair as that might be. You should have a copy—probably available on your school’s website—of the student handbook. Grading disputes might be addressed in something called grading and examination procedures or the like. Some schools have a rule that allows for students to request that their work be reevaluated by another instructor or there is a complaint filing process. The first step would be for your friend to calmly address the issue with the professor, since any complaint will likely depend upon the student attempting to resolve the issue first with the professor. If you can’t find anything in the handbook or you have any questions, contact the dean of undergraduate studies or dean of students. Or if your friend has a good relationship with their advisor, they might contact them too. An advisor can be a good advocate.
