Practice your pitch with Kleiner Perkins and Sequoia Capital on TechCrunch Live
TechCrunch Live records live today and tomorrow at 12:00 PDT, and you’re invited to pitch your startup. Called Pitch Practice, it should be self-explanatory. Participants have a chance to practice their pitch by presenting to another founder and investor. This week’s guests are fantastic too. You want their feedback on your pitch.
Participants have two minutes to pitch their startup to the…
Phone the orders in with Pitch Practice Cup Phones
Take a step back in time as girls practice their cookie sales pitches with these retro cup phones.
Supplies:
Two paper cups
One 10-foot string
Small screwdriver, drill bit or plastic upholstery needle
Pitch Practice Cup Phone clip art
Pitch script (Tip: Make one here!)
Scissors
Glue
Markers
Directions:
An adult helper or volunteer should prepare the cups by punching a hole in the bottom of the cups. They can be done one at a time, by hand with a small screw driver, drill bit or upholstery needle, or you can stack a few together and run a drill through all of them at once. Note: Make sure the hole won’t be too big that the knot in the string slides through.
Thread each end of the string through the holes in two cups. Tie a knot on both ends of the string and pull the cups to opposite ends.
Decorate the cups with Girl Scout Cookie-themed clip art and other fun stickers.
Use the pitch script to come up with a tried-and-true cookie pitch. Two girls use the cup phones to act out the cookie sale.
TIP: Be sure to hold the string taut and straight, and avoid extending the string around corners for best reception.
Building sales skills can be fun with these finger puppet people. Let girls get crafty and role play putting their people skills into action!
Materials:
Disposable white cotton therapy gloves (available at supermarkets and some crafts stores)
Yarn
Cardstock
Markers
Glue dots
Scissors
Clip art outfits
Store backdrop template
Instructions:
Print the store backdrop template and cut it out. Then, cut out the window. Tape or glue the “Girl Scout Cookies” section on the bottom of the window for display.
Cut the fingers off of the cotton therapy gloves. These will be the bodies of the finger puppets.
Print the clip art outfits onto cardstock and cut them out. Use glue dots to glue the outfits to the glove fingers.
Now just add the finishing touches! Use markers to draw a friendly Girl Scout face and glue yarn on for hair.
Girls can perfect their sales pitches with this quirky cookie box craft.
Materials:
Cookie box
Scissors or craft knife
Clear tape
Duct tape
Socks
Fabric glue
Glue dots or hot glue
Miscellaneous craft supplies
Directions:
Use the scissors or craft knife to cut across the front of the cookie box. Continue around the other sides of the box until you separate the two halves. The top part of the box will be the face and the bottom of the box will be the “bottom lip.”
To make the bottom lip, take the bottom half of the box and cut down the middle of the Nutrition Facts side. Continue this cut along the middle of the box bottom and opposite side until the two pieces are separated. Nest the pieces inside one another with the open sides together and the printed sides facing out. Tape together using clear tape.
Stack the top box onto the small box with open sides facing the same direction.
Use duct tape to create a hinge, connecting the two boxes where they meet on the cut edges.
Cut black felt into an oval shape the length of the original cookie box. Cut red felt into a stripe that is half as long and wide as the black oval.
Open the “mouth” of the puppet and attach the black felt piece using glue dots or hot glue.
Close the mouth and apply fabric glue to the taped hinge. Wear the sock like a sock puppet and “bite” the hinge. Hold the “bite” down for a couple of minutes until the glue is set.
Time to decorate! Girls use miscellaneous craft items to create a puppet character of their very own.
Encourage girls to keep the creativity flowing with their sales pitches. Use the puppets for play and pitch practice.

Some very cool entrepreneurs joined us at Pitch Practice, including “Thomas Edison.” See below for that nugget of pure determination. Here’s who pitched.
TenRocket – (Our sponsor!) Chris Turner set the example for how to pitch: TenRocket builds your web or mobile app in 10 business days for $10k, because most startups never launch because they never get their MVP out the door.

Pitch Practice is now sponsored by Atlanta Tech Village member and Pitch Practice alumni TenRocket: Visit tenrocket.com/makeitreal to join their community (built on slack) of entrepreneurs, developers, and investors. Today’s session was exceptional: packed out room, great pitches, great feedback, and (see note at the bottom) incredible networking. Here’s who pitched.
A Pitch Practice Success Story: the first pitch from @10rocket founder Chris Turner #techblogs #startupblogs
A little over a year ago, I met Chris Turner when I was giving a talk about bootstrapping your startup down at NEX for the folks at Tech Talent South. Chris had asked me to grab coffee and listen to his idea of how he wanted to totally disrupt the US Education system.
“We demand that kids consume, consume, consume all this information and content, but we never require them to create, so when they…
