Everything was going fucking wrong. His landlord was arguing with him about rent (which he had decided to, for the first time in three years, raise), he had stepped in fucking cat vomit that was practically embedded into his fucking carpet, his father had decided to call him and start a fight over something childish. Traffic was hell, his coffee spilled in his car because he hit a pothole, he scraped his car on the curb. Everything was building up, and up, and up. His brain was static and mush, and it felt heavy in the way a full cardboard box felt. The sound of the waiting room was the equivalent of raking nails on a chalkboard, and the sound of handovers was only further pissing him off. He needed a cigarette, something to offset the bubbling explosion in his chest.

He flexed his fingers as he walked out to the front of the ER, cigarette dangling in his mouth the moment he exited the doors.

Click. Nothing. Click. Click. Click. He growled as he kept flicking his lighter. Without realizing he was doing it, he threw the lighter onto the sidewalk. “Piece of fucking shit!” he yelled as it hit the pavement.
