I recently picked up an orchid to expand my horizons. I’m nervous. c;
So far, so good. I repotted it in a mixture of moss and bark and kept it in a plastic cup with plenty of drainage. Everything still looks perky and there are a couple of other blooms on the way. So we shall see if I can keep this baby alive for more than 2 weeks. :P
I’ve learned that the roots photosynthesize, so when they are happy and green they don’t need any water. Once they start to turn silvery and the leaves get a little soft they need a good soaking.
When repotted /it seems as if/ you have to be SO careful or you can crack and break the roots, which I found to be extremely annoying. I trimmed any of the dead stuff off with clean, sharp scissors and carefully arranged the roots around each other and tried my best to tuck growing medium around the roots, but not to much.
I think I need to pull some of the top bark away from the leaves, otherwise it could get crown rot. I’m assuming that’s due to trapped moisture, this plant really likes to breathe.
It’s been pretty different compared to any other plant I’ve owned before. I’m excited to see if I can get her to bloom again.
Regardless of the outcome, it’s been an awesome edition to my apartment.
