ah yes complete lack of irony with both the bird children consuming eggs for breakfast and with the so far Highly Maternal fourteen-year-old commenting on her lack of fembot nature and the "blind guy" cooking breakfast. i have a sudden new suspicion that max is, in fact, an asshole. i will keep you posted.
Y’all know it’s about time to write another book when I get Super Stoked about building writing playlists. I might actually post this one once it’s finalized. Stay tuned.

I was tagged by @just0nemorepage, and here are her questions! Under the cut, if I can figure out how to do cuts right:
1. Do you tend to snack while reading?
Sometimes. I prefer to have a warm beverage of some sort instead, but if I’m hungry when I sit down to read I’ll grab something small and bite-sized. Entire bags of food disappear that way, though, so I have to be careful.
2. How long does it usually take for you to finish books?
Recently it’s only been taking a day or two for most of them, but that’s because I’m underemployed and my tiny work schedule is very flexible. If it’s nonfiction and I’m taking notes on it (I’ve been reading lots of books for worldbuilding research purposes), it takes about a week. If I have uninterrupted reading time and I’m not writing anything actively, I’ll plow through books in a day.
3. Do you abandon books you don’t like, or stick it through till the end?
Stick it through. Again, it doesn’t take all that long for me, and usually I enjoy books or truly despise them. The ones I end up despising are fun to rage read, and then it works my writerly self up to Do Better.
4. What’s the last book you finished?
My Goodreads tells me it was Run by Ann Patchett, which my mom really enjoyed and wanted me to read so I would know what to recommend to her. It was okay.
5. What’s the best way for you to get out of a reading slump?
I’m fortunate in that I don’t often experience reading slumps. Reading is important self-care for me, so my “slumps” are just forcing myself to slog through a chapter of whatever’s by my bed until it’s over. If the slump is super bad, though, that generally means I need to go write more, so I do that.
6. How do you like to sort your bookshelves?
First by fiction and nonfiction. For fiction, things get sorted by YA and not, and then by genre, with a shelf for Favorite Series (Odd Thomas, Shades of Magic, and Gentlemen Bastards) and Favorite Non-Series (basically things I’d recommend to anyone). All my realistic fiction, historical or not, is shelved in the same spot, and those are grouped loosely by country/geographical area--I’m trying to wrap all the way around the world.
For non-fiction, I’ve got a shelf for general science at the bottom, a shelf that’s half birds and half more science, a history shelf, a religion/languages/memoirs shelf, and then poetry, theory, and miscellany on the top.
I tried to sort them by color once, and discovered that many of my books are black and white and also that I don’t like series not being by each other. If I had more books in more colors, maybe I’d keep it like that, but it just didn’t work out for now.
7. How do you react when someone asks if they can borrow one of your books?
Ooh it depends. Generally with extreme caution. I am Very Particular about my books, and I’ve had just enough bad experiences with loaners to not want to do it. Fortunately most people who I’m close to understand, so I give them a Spiel about taking perfect care of said books. Either that scares them off, or they promise to abide by the terms and conditions. I have a one and done policy, though--if you hork up my book, you never ever get to borrow anything else ever again. I am Protective.
8. Which fictional character do you relate most to?
Oh my gosh this question is so hard I had to go stare at my bookshelves for like fifteen minutes. Um. The first name that popped into my head was Victor Vale from Vicious, which is almost concerning and also it’s been a while since I’ve read it. Another candidate is Lady Trent from A Natural History of Dragons? I have lots of favorite characters, but I don’t generally think of them in terms of relatability, at least not consciously.
9. Do you get easily distracted while reading?
If my phone is around, absolutely. Also if the book is just mediocre, yeah. But once I’m into it, I’m into it, and it’s very difficult to pull me away.
10. How do you decide on which to read next?
I’ve been shelving all my Unread Books pages-out on my shelves so I know which ones I still need to read. For a while, I just read what I was feeling, but now that I’m being more intentional about it, at the end of a month I’ll go through and pick out a stack of things I want to read next month so I can get used to the idea of reading them and mentally prepare. I try to balance YA, not-YA stuff, and nonfiction so there’s a variety. Last month, my brother visited, and he pulled out a stack for me, which is good because I probably wouldn’t’ve gotten to them any time soon.
11. What kinds of books are you looking for more of these days?
I did a only-buy-POC-books-year a couple years ago, and that was super successful. Since then, I’ve been looking for more stuff by writers of color and women of color, specifically, especially in the sci-fi and fantasy realms. I’m way tired of Generic Medieval European Fantasy. Also, I’m trying to do a Read Around the World, with a book or two from every country, so I’m looking for that, too. If anyone has any recs, hit me up! I love book recs!
Here are my 11 questions:
1. Are there any books that you love to hate?
2. Favorite under-rated book?
3. Has a book ever made you cry? Which one?
4. Do you listen to music while reading?
5. If you could go on any adventure with any character anywhere, who would you go with and where would it be?
6. If you could have coffee with any author, who would it be and why?
7. How do you feel about New Adult as a genre/category?
8. What’s something you’d like to see more of in books?
9. What trope are you always a sucker for?
10. Do you write? If you do, what?
11. Favorite bookish soapbox rant to go on?
