Diary Entry
Month Finished: July 2025
As someone who suffers from anxiety and depression, I absolutely loved how the creator addressed the subject. Depicting mental health struggles using visual metaphors has got to be one of my favorite tropes in media, and Geist was a personification that hit me very close to home. From his negative comments disguised as love and care to trying to convince MC that they enjoyed being alone and they didn't need anyone but themselves, I had to pause a couple of times because it was scary how much I could relate to having told myself all of these things when they couldn't be further from the truth.
Still, I wouldn't say that he's wholeheartedly bad. That isn't to say that he was in the right, not at all, but if he's meant to be a manifestation of anxiety, then I feel like I'd be doing a disservice if I called him unapologetically evil. In some cases anxiety can be a positive and helpful emotion that can help us prepare for the unknown or motivate us to find solutions to potential problems, but it becomes dangerous when it starts to severely impact a person's daily life like in the case of MC. I'm glad that the creator handled his character with that same level of nuance.
On the other side of things, Kalei is such a sweetheart and the perfect contrast to Geist's cold nature! Every interaction with him was a joy and relief from the darker moments in the game, which I can only imagine is how MC felt as well. Watching their friendship develop was so satisfying, especially when they're talking about their common interests (and lowkey now I'm interested in the Detective Dog movies because why did they get so deep). I also loved how he was shown to have his own little anxieties and self-doubts was a really nice touch. It's a great way to help MC (and possibly the player) feel a little less alone.
Sorry for all the yap. I just love these kinds of stories. This is really great stuff and I hope to see more like it in the future!
