[ 10. “I’m right here, okay?”]

“Do you WANT to get yourself killed?” Uno asked sharply, only the vaugest of static from his communicator to hint at his turmoil. Uno was an AI, a computer, he wasn’t supposed to lose control like this, he wasn’t supposed to feel the edges of himself fray and scatter at the security-camera footage of his best friend and hero laid out on the plastic lid of a dumpster.

After falling off a roof.

“I...” The Duck Avenger trails off, trying to catch his breath, “I didn’t exactly... go out of my way to get punched off the roof, if that’s... if that’s what your asking.” he rolls sideways, dropping off the trash can and stumbling at the small impact, bacing himself against the metal bin.

“Are you hurt?” He wasn’t supposed to worry, but he did anyway, because it was Donald, and Uno loved him. There was no big revelation to that fact. it was just the logical conclusion. Deep affection, fondness, a friendship set to music- however it was defined, Uno had come to feel that way for Donald. Deeply, irrevocably, entirely. it was written and rewritten into his code, backed-up on all his hard drives, saved and engrained in the deepest parts of his programming.

“I’m right here, okay?” Donald wheezes into his communicator, a pale reassurance when he couldn’t take his hand of the dumpster to stand, “I’ll always be right here.”

Uno won’t be satisfied until Donald is back at the tower, “Right there,” Uno snips, “Is too far away.”

Donald laughs at his worry, finally catching his breath and stepping fully into the alleyway to make his way home- he’d definitely have lost that Evronian he was chasing by now, “I love you too.” He says, slipping out of view of the security camera Uno had commandeered and into the shadows.

Uno scraps the first body. it’s a bit too lanky, the legs slightly too tall. its just vaugly uncanny valley enough for him to dismantle it for parts. the second body is better, but the weight distribution is off and the knee joints take too much pressure. He wont accept anythig less than absolute perfection, because this is important to him.

the sixth verion of himself is the one. the robotics are smooth, silent, jack rabbiting into motion the moment he thinks it, no delay. He’s decorate the iron skeleton with white feathers and black hair- he was Everette Ducklairs long lost son, he had to look the part first and foremost- and he sews a pin-stripe suit together after downloading the pattern off google. It’s tailored perfectly to fit him, feels smooth and organic on his feathers- and god isn’t that a sensation? feathers, cloth, even the synthetic breathing he’d programmed in. he didn’t want to pretend to be alive, he wanted to really feel like he was.

He stretches his legs, just the right shade of orange, and walks the room. it’s strange, existing like this, without his normal omnipotence. it’s exhilerating.

“hey Un-” Donald’s voice cuts off, voice stopping short and Uno jumps in surprise. Surprise! he’d never really been surprised before, not like this, “uh. hello?”

Uno spins around, electric green eyes glinting, “Hello Donald!” he’s nervous Donald won’t like it, suddenly. he’s nervous Donald won’t recognize him.

The way Donald sweeps him up in his arms, spinning around the room in excitement, puts all those feelings to rest.
