LCM & HCF | Introduction | Part- | Arithmetic | Vinay | Tone Academy This class deals with introduction to L.C.M and H.C.F concepts. 1. L.C.M (Least Common Multiple): L.C.M defines the least number which is exactly divisible by two or more numbers. • The L.C.M of two or more numbers is greater than or equal to the greatest number of given numbers. Example: LCM of 10, 15, 30 = 30. LCM of 12, 20, 36, 40 = 360. (i) Finding L.C.M of 10, 15, 30 - by Factorization Method: 10 = 2 x 5 = 21 x 51 15 = 3 x 5 = 31 x 51 30 = 2 x 3 x 5 = 21 x 31 x 51 Therefore, L.C.M of 10 ,15, 30 = 2 x 3 x 5 = 30. Inorder to find the LCM by factorization method, note down the factors of each given number and then multiply each factor (which has the max. Index value) for all the given numbers, to get the LCM. NOTE: If the same multiple occurs in all the given numbers, then consider the factor which has the maximum index value. (ii) L.C.M of 24, 36 & 40: 24 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 = 23 x 31 36 = 2 x 2 x 3 x 3 = 22 x 32 40 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 5 = 23 x 51 Therefore, L.C.M of 24,36,40 = 23 x 32x 51 = 360. 2. H.C.F (Highest Common Factor): H.C.F defines the highest number that is a factor of every number in a given series of numbers. • HCF is also called as GCD (Greatest Common Divisor) or GCF (Greatest Common Factor). • The H.C.F of two or more numbers is smaller than or equal to the smallest number of given numbers. Example: HCF of 36 & 84 = 12. Finding H.C.F: (i) HCF of 32 and 80: Factors of 32 = 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32. Factors of 80 =1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 16, 20 and 80. The common factor of 32 and 80= 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16. Therefore, Highest Common Factor (H.C.F) of 32 and 80 = 16. (ii) HCF of 36, 54 and 63: Factors of 36 = 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18 and 36. Factors of 54 = 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18, 27, and 54. Factors of 63 =1, 3, 7, 9, 21, and 63. The common factors of 36, 54 and 63 = 1, 3 and 9. Therefore, Highest Common Factor (H.C.F) of 36, 54 and 63 = 9. Finding H.C.F by Factorization method: H.C.F of 36,54,63: 36 = 2 x 2 x 3 x 3 54 = 2 x 3 x 3 x 3 63 = 3 x 3 x 7 Therefore, H.C.F of 36, 54, 63 = 3 x 3 = 9. - Solved examples on L.C.M and H.C.F. - Find the lowest common multiple of 24, 36 and 40 ? - A, B and C start at the same time in the same direction to run around a circular stadium.
