i love azran legacy as a game but man there’s so much there that could be so much better. going around the world is wonderful in theory but none of the locations feel…lasting? or compelling? in the original trilogy & last specter, even the places we don’t visit for very long (dropstone, london proper) are burned into my memory, but i straight up can’t remember any of the locations in azran legacy. there’s…kod? maybe? which is where you crash land? and the cold one, frost something? and the nest at the end? i know what happens in the other places, mostly, but i’m wracking my brain and i don’t know their names. the sangria one. there’s one named after sangria for sure. and part of that is that i’ve been playing the other games for much, much longer, but i’ve played miracle mask the same amount as azran legacy and i know monte d’or’s name! and stansbury! and the ruins of akbadain!
there’s just something missing in the locations in azran legacy. some lacking laytonesque quality. they’re not eerie enough. there’s no real mystery to solve. the only place that maybe measures up is that windmill village, which i forgot about until four seconds ago, but the story there is…not the series’ best, i’ll say that much, and it’s not given any narrative weight. and everything in those towns happens during the day, when we all know the transition to night is a critical inflection point in layton games (arguably you get this when you go to the nest, but that’s much too late), and again, where is the EERIENESS? nothing in this game would give child me nightmares up until the ending. and the ending is good, but the other games build their creepy atmospheres up gradually and carefully and mix the whimsy with the horror instead of giving you 75% straight whimsy and 25% straight horror.
and again, i like azran legacy! would love to play myself someday! it’s a good game! but i can see the bones of a great game, and i wish we got that game instead.
