There is misinformation going around that on the official Trigun Stampede site it says that Knives is in love with his brother in a romantic way. This is false. This misunderstanding first started when somebody shared a screenshot of the Millions Knives character bios which supposedly stated he is "strongly in love and obsessed with his brother". This was a Google Translate translation. Google Translate is useless for translating Japanese because communication in Japanese depends a lot on context that is not as clear as in other languages. Therefore AI is terrible for translating Japanese.

What does it say, then?

The word that is used for love in the official website is 愛 (ai). Anyone that knows Japanese knows that Japanese people have different words for love depending on what type of love it is. 愛 (ai) is used to describe pure and familial love. 恋愛(ren-ai) or 恋 (koi) is for romantic and sexual love. Think of it as something similar to agape vs eros.

This is very important because you will continue to see the word love being used in relation to Vash and Knives, but what kind of love it is is important. It's 愛 (ai), which is used to describe pure and familial love.
