Starting the planes project I decided instead approaching my ideas through sketching, I wanted to be able to get a better sense of the space and shape of the sculpture. So I decided to use Sketchup (a 3D modeling program) to create mockups of the model design I liked the best. The bottom image is a photo of the model in SketchUp. One of the biggest challenges of creating this model in real life was the effective and appealing placement of the Trapazoidal hole. In the upper image is my solution to the hole. After I drew it on the balsa wood, I drilled several holes into the bored and then threaded a band saw through the holes carefully and then sanded the edges down to smooth hard angles that looked much more appealing.
