Black Sabbath "13" is a fucking masterpiece of songwriting.
I'll discuss my favorites.
Geezer Butler has usually been the main songwriter in Sabbath and I think also this time he was responsible for the words.
Loner is such a great anthem to those who feel misunderstood, who feel like they have no one to talk to. It perfectly describes isolation and how it escalates to the point that you feel like it's too late to recover and you'll die alone.
Zeitgeist is like the continuation of Planet Caravan. The lyrics aren't obvious but to me it is about living in the reality where everything is dominated by theory and reason, calculated, and people are the same. Values like love and feelings fade to the background and those of us who are over sensitive cannot really adapt and we just float around, wondering if we'll ever meet likeminded people. And in the end we all die anyway so what's the point.
Dear Father is so underrated and rarely discussed. It's about child abuse in the Catholic Church. If I remember correctly, the song was written as some kinda dialogue between the priest, who has committed the sin and is aware of the heaviness of it, and God himself. The writing craftsmanship of Butler is incredible - the rhymes of words such as "violence" and "silence" or "theocracy" and "hypocrisy". The tempo how slow Ozzy sings those words makes them just hit you, sink in, and leave you terrified.
