My nephew’s dilemma
My brother’s kid, Henry, a lifelong Detroiter and true-blue Tigers fan, forwarded to me the call for rebellion shown above. It creates a dilemma for him.
“Not sure,” he wrote in a text message, “whether to go and boo, or just refrain from spending any money on the Tigers.”
Ah ... there’s the rub.
The “Al” mentioned in the meme is Al Avila, the Tigers’ general manager since 2015.
- Fact One: The Tigers have reeked since Al took over, after making the post-season play-offs in four consecutive seasons before that - 2011 to 2014.
- Fact Two: The Tigers have had many moving parts since then - a new manager, a new president and CEO, different players, etc. The one constant has been Al Avila. His winning percentage is around .390, meaning that the team, on average, has won fewer than 4 out 10 of its games during the 8-year Avila reign.
So this is the quandary Tigers fas face: Do they pounce on the opportunity, alongside other disgruntled fans, to participate in a public display of disgust (and call for change), or do they show their contempt (and save their money) by staying away ...?
