A place I’m visiting as often as I can at the moment is this little patch of wildflowers, which luckily for us is just a 10 minute stroll from where we live. The photos don’t quite do it justice, as it really is one of the most beautiful sights. It’s so lovely to see everyone admiring it as they pass, some people even pull up by the roadside and get out of their cars to get a closer look. It’s constantly changing too, any fading blooms are quickly replaced by a new species pushing their up way through the tangle of poppies and cornflowers and adding a new pop of colour to the palette.

Zinnia is a genus of plants of the sunflower tribe within the daisy family. One of the easiest annuals to grow, zinnia flowers bring an explosion of color wherever they go. They have bright, solitary, daisy-like flowerheads on a single, erect stem, which makes them great for use as a cutting flower or as food for butterflies. In 2013, there was a flash flood on the property. Our entrance walkway was just one of the areas that was extensively damaged. This spring the area looks natural and beautiful, and is able to accommodate sudden rainstorms with little damage. Although the area has a natural look, it was designed and built by Grover Engineering and @johnscottexcavating. The step pools are both to slow the water and to create habitat for macro invertebrates and other critters that live in the stream. For the first few years after the storm no Spring Salamanders or Two-lined Salamanders were found in the lower stream (probably due to all the sedimentation that washed into the stream). Spring Salamanders were found about three years after the flood and were found again this year by @uvm_rsenr Field Herpetology class. Instead of rebuilding a dirt walkway @timberandstonevt built this bridge which allows for higher water to flow underneath (if needed). It also provides a great place for Eastern Phoebes to nest. Thank you again @vtartscouncil for helping fund the building of this bridge. The plants on the banks are primarily native plants and almost entirely planted and maintained by volunteers. The plants have been chosen for both erosion control and for pollinators.
