Stop Complaining About Lasers

So something I've come to find a bit annoying is when people complain about laser guns in a piece of media, where they call it censorship and wish they used a real gun.

This complaint doesn't make sense because often times there is no actual evidence for it being censorship, but an assumption there is censorship. For example, Spider-Man: the Animated Series has loads of claims of censorship, but one John Semper has outright stated such censorship wasn't actually a thing. That they simply chose to use things like laser guns, and that it wasn't some higher up mandate.

There is also something to be said that the usage of laser gun makes sense. For example, in superhero media often times in-universe they create highly advanced technology, or get access to it via contact with aliens for say Apokalips. Then if it is a piece of media like Star Wars, Halo, Invader Zim, or even Lilo and Stitch. It again makes sense for them to have weapons that are technologically advanced like plasma blasters.

That being said this also ignores how laser guns or plasma blasters can be just as deadly. People will miss over this fact for various reasons. The characters have plot armor, the characters are so strong they can take lasers, the lasers are stun lasers, the lasers are being used for comedy because that's the tone, etc. Meanwhile you have pieces of media where they do hurt characters like in Halo for example. People also forget laser do burn things and by extension can harm others. Something someone I was talking to mentioned was in some DC movie they watch this very thing happened when a laser hit a character in the arm leaving behind a burn. Another piece of media that does something similar is Lilo and Stitch. The plasma blaster is shown to leave behind burn marks, and we see it's destructive capabilities by what it does to the house in the film. We just don't real damage because the characters have plot armor, or a Stitch who can tank it.

Overall, laser guns in a piece of media is not evidence of Weenie Hut Jr. rules being forced on a piece of media, this isn't 4Kids censorship where they completely remove the guns. But rather it's all about the type of media you are watching, alongside the tone of the show the creators are going for. Written by Eris the Lorekeeper

Fallout: Plasma Caster

Were you previously aware that in the demo for original Fallout, the Plasma Rifle was instead named “Plasma Caster?”

This was changed to Plasma Rifle in the final game. The “Plasma Caster” name was later adopted in Fallout: New Vegas for the weapon of the same name.

Plasma Love

After starting 2024, I decided to explore the roots of the shooter genre. Tried and completed the original DooM dilogy. In short, I really enjoyed it. Especially the plasma rifle. I decided to encapsulate my love for it in this sketch.
