Mainly in plastic products colorants plays a major role by providing attractive colors to the products. Have you ever seen a color that has immediately reminded you of a particular product? If your answer is yes, it’s because color has emotional factors that influence product positioning and user preferences.

I would like to share some interesting statistical information about plastic that will make you wondered!

An investigation carried by the Institute for Color Research reports that people make a subconscious evaluation about a product within 90 seconds of viewing it, and within 62% and 90% of that evaluation is based on color alone. It is fascinating, right?

Here colorants are some insoluble particles that are combine with the plastic that will give you a desired color to the plastic. It is organic and tends to form clumps of pigment particles.

The foremost purpose of using colorants in plastics is to mix the desired color either for aesthetic reasons and market

appeal or because of functional demands. Generally, organic colorants is more effective than inorganic one because of tinting capacity and color strength, creating brighter.

Inorganic colors are most likely to migrate than dyes and organic pigments, so they are used to color plastics that require a high level of opacity.

Usually these colorants are mixed with plastic material using the material mixer.

Types of Plastic colorants: Masterbatches colored pellets Dry Color Paste or Liquid Colors

Masterbatches:

The plastic colorants are in pellet form that is blend with the plastic with high concentration. It provides beautiful coloring with high concentration.

Colored pellets:

Like masterbatches, plastic colorants are in pellet form they are mix together at the equivalent concentration as the end products. Accordingly, it does not require blending them with natural pellets. They also have no trouble mixing and ease of stably in producing the desired color. However, the cost is higher than other products.

Dry Color:

The colorants with powder state it is directly mixed together with the plastic pellets. They are little inexpensive colorants due to there is no issue while mixing with the plastic material.

Paste or Liquid Colors:

These type of plastic colorants are in liquid form or a paste form but it is distinct from liquid Masterbatch in terms of viscosity. Paste colors are utilized only if the base resin is in liquid form. Vinyl chloride is one kind of base resin that is in liquid form.

Apart from that there are two classifications of pigments which include organic Pigments and Inorganic Pigments.

Organic Pigments:

Natural pigments are for paintings and decoration in earlier times. The most common organic pigments are indigo from the plant Isatis tinctoria, which have the extract to color their bodies.

Here the insoluble blue color is consider as a pigment rather than as a dye. Another natural pigments are chlorophyll. Inorganic Pigments: Chromium pigments which is a discovery of the element in a rare Siberian mineral. Lead chromate provides you bright yellow and oranges, including chrome yellow.

Ultramarine is a natural blue pigment derived from lapis lazuli, a semi-precious mineral that can produce blue pigments.
