Origami vs Paper Maché

I've been pursuing these new aural models using paper, and some other using water. (see Analogies of Control, K, and Parables for a starter). They've gone ok and there will be more, but it's becoming obvious that the metaphor and the aural reality are at odds in my ears.  Origami is a beautiful craft and it is attractive to the point of distraction. Being fortunate to have someone in my house who is adept at it makes it even more tempting to try and bring it in to the studio. 

The dry crackles, slides,  tears and crumples ranging from leaves of notebook paper through well worn newsprint to handmade felted papers have qualities that I want to bring to the performers' ears. I want them to build these sounds into the relationships they have with their instruments.

The water sounds, as many composers over many years have known, are begging to have their pitches and rhythms scattered on paper like inky raindrops. It would be logical to find the notes in these waters and craft them into manuscript. Some of that might happen, but for now, I've found another way to put water and paper together and once again the action is more sculpture than writing, more performative than it is descriptive, although it will be both.

Things are still too early, but I thought of a story (or applied one maybe)

In the Southern Lands a giant strode across the plains and over the hills, tearing lives from the ground, breaking the roots from the bodies of trees and pouring life onto the ground from the broken vessels that once carried it. 

A family lived in the giant's path on Olden Knoll. Hearing the giant's approach, the mother built a Gollum of paper maché from the leaves on the ground and the leaves of her books. The father painted it with powerful symbols in ink and paint from the ground around their home. Although the giant could not be stopped, when it arrived at Olden Knoll, the Gollum lifted the giant over the house and threw him far away leaving the family safe. (that's all I have right now)

It's really someone else's story, not really mine. I mean, it kinda happened to someone I know.
