In Bucharest there is a park full of people. Gradina Cismigiu, is known for its beauty and, as evening approaches, the roosting of its crows. First, as I sat waiting, I heard what seemed to be a single crow, cawing in groups of three, with about fifteen seconds' pause, and then another three. 'He' did this many times, and then went silent.

Analogies of Control is an acousmatic work with a performance facet built in. After the full studio version was mixed, an additional mix was created. A three track work in which all of the non-cello sources (quick freeze metals) are separated and delivered to a performer via headphones.

In concert the audience hears a tape part of entirely cello and cello derived sounds, and the cellist playing an imitation of the 3rd track. Only the cellist hears the irradiated metals.

Consider the cellist a very non-black box. A very coloured speaker, or maybe a bio-analogical signal processor, if you will.

This performance, by Craig Hultgren, is particularly significant as many of the cello samples are culled from a recording he made of Parables, the first stage in this adventure in form.

They released some preview pages for the Witchfinder series that I’m currently working on. And I thought I’d take a moment to point out why Dave Stewart deserves all the Eisners. Here you can see my inked and gray washed pages next to Dave’s colors. And while I’m at it, I LOVE Clem Robins’ lettering. That dude is one of the best letterers in comics. I’m really lucky to be working with these guys. I can’t even believe that I make comics. This is the best of all lives.

One of the highlights on a recent trip to Dublin was seeing my author-cousin again, Lynda Rucker. She brought her friend, another writer, Maura McHugh, who writes Witchfinder/Hellboy now.

Ever since i heard Bobby McFerrin work with this tune i wanted to have a go. Here I have attempted to bring in some fairly deep and meaningful concepts which can quite easily/happily be missed .. It's a long piece, a meditation.. it plays with past and future, it plays with emphasis and dominant notes. It plays with the obvious and the not so obvious as well as reminding us of the beautiful tune Charles Gounod added which seems as though it must have been written at the same time as the accompaniment but wasn't. It plays with the idea of improvisation in classical music and wordless vocal sounds within a Classical style. There are SO MANY ways to make music that is lovely without following perceived rules to the letter.. This was performed in a spectacular church in the City of London called St Mary Aldermary. You can hear the coffee machine and the tinkling of spoons on china and a little of the people talking. It was a busy day in the cafe at the back... people filtered in and sat and listened.. a lovely experience. I could have stopped to sort it out, however sometimes you have to let the documenting go out the window... come down next time and hear it live.. :)
