When I hear someone talk about PC or mac, IOS or android, ipad or tablet pc, what I always hear are people touting the software platform. I understand that to most people their electronic devices are defined by what software they run, but for me it starts with and ends with hardware.

The big difference is that operating systems like Android and Windows don't run on a limited series of hardware like IOS/OSX do. This means that while they may be less stable, they will be much more economical, upgradeable, and less proprietary. The objective of Windows, to run on anything, is an impossible one. The fact that it works as well as it does is a testament to collaboration. Thousands of hardware manufacturers are producing millions of pieces of hardware that can all be plugged into a PC. It is nearly unfathomable. I believe one of the reasons Vista dropped a significant amount of hardware support, as compared to XP, was because the list had simply become too staggering. Win XP users had support for a decade of hardware. Apple's products are designed to work on a handful of hardware platforms. Try installing OSX on your Dell computer, or slipping IOS on to your smartphone and see how well it works. Conversely, any modern Mac can run Win 7. 

Apple is a boutique vendor that tries to meet all end-user tech needs under their product lines. They limit their hardware platform by choice to maintain better control. This is supposed to increase stability and cohesion as well. What this means is: design will be unified from hardware options to software design to work seamlessly. This does not apply with equal truth to third-party software. The trade-off: performance for integration.  

The PC platform is different. Microsoft does not design or control what hardware implements their products. This leaves it up to the manufacturer to develop, and maintain, driver and software support. This also creates competition and lowers prices. The downside is that the design isn't unified at all. Because the software environment is so vast and is comprised of independent members, not everything in that environment will work together. Manufacturers and software developers are aware of this and either release updates to solve problems, or release hardware compatibility lists. The tradeoff here is: options for cohesion. 

The greatest strength of the PC, in my opinion, is that you can build your own system, either as an end-user or a manufacturer, without having to spend money on costly design. Because the hardware market for PCs is open like it is, prices are cheap, and the stiff competition drives innovation. Mac hardware is now a small subset of PC hardware. That is to say, that all Mac hardware (with few exceptions) can run Windows, but OSX cannot run on most PC hardware.

I won't discuss the software platform besides to say that I don't like OSX. I think deciding between the two is largely a matter of taste and feature needs. The point that I want to drive home is: when you buy into a platform, you don't just get OSX or Windows, you get the hardware they are constrained to as well. I think that the hardware limitations of Apple products, and their tremendous markups, are reason enough to avoid them. I also realize that they offer greater utility and ease of use to low-end users. Don't even mention nortell, sun, or linux to me either. Those are micro-niches that don't even effect the rest of the computing world. The upgradability of the PC platform is staggering, and the options for form factors are impressive as well, id est: built-in systems, HTPCs, and custom rigs. While most users aren't concerned with being able to upgrade to the latest graphics cards when they come out, or having a greater ability to expand their drive options in the long run, power users insist on these features and base their purchasing decisions on them.

As for mobile devices, apple offers better support and a list of accessories more nauseatingly extensive than anyone. Their products, however, are lacking in hardware features and upgradability (storage and battery) that is becoming standard in mobile devices. The ipod, for instance, offers the lowest capacity per dollar in the mp3/4 player market, it simply relies on the name and design to sell. Don't even let me get started with DRM and iTunes...

Tell me one thing a Mac can do that a PC can't, and I'll give you ten things a PC can do that Macs never will. I will not purchase inferior products because they have a well designed ad campaign. I am not impressed by chrome-plated turds.
