Tights: A Man's View
Hello, I am John from Platform-7 and I have been working away behind the scenes to get the project up and ready over the last 3 months. It has been a fascinating experience already and I am pretty confident this is going to become quite a significant piece of work.
I have already noted a clear divide in responses between male and female when I mention the project. Women are instantly intrigued despite the guard immediately rising in readiness to either tell me off or walk away. Within a minute they appear interested and want details. Although I am complete stranger (or maybe it is because I am complete stranger) that within 5 minutes the woman or women are offering their old tights to me for the project. This is in marked difference to how men respond.
The image above is a card I received for my birthday from an old mate last night. He did not know about the tights project, it was purely a coincidence and a play on the fact that the birthday gathering was going to be male only friends and this would be a humour point in choosing who looked most like who in the picture. Men have, it seems, completely different associative tendencies with tights. The humour may hide a slight embarrassment, or fear possibly, of the garment. Since the beginning every man has so far reacted in an almost school boy fashion, regardless of age, with eye brows raised and letting out a little giggle. Comments have ranged from ‘sounds a bit purvey’ to ‘cor yeah!’. There has been, without exception, a slight discomfort for a few moments; as if I have found them doing something they shouldn’t be doing. It is clear already to me that these often cheap, easily discarded items carry much more psychological weight than I realised. It is going to be an interesting few weeks!
