I've been reading through the blog, and noticed that the admins seem to dislike play-by's, and was wondering what exactly qualified as a play-by. For example, I use an FC for a canon character I RP as, who is from a comic series and so doesn't have an assigned actor. I wondered if the admins of this blog would consider that bad or lazy, since I also include a description of the character.
Well, according to the only two places on the internet that actually outright define what a play-by is (the last time I checked anyway), usually it's a photo of a real person used to represent someone's role-playing character.
Depending on what part of the internet you happen to be in, game and anime concept art may also be considered as play-bys when used to represent someone's role-playing character.
Depending on the circumstances and the picture in question, I'll be somewhat lenient about it, but the idea of using real people's photos to represent a fictional character doesn't really set all that well with me. It's slightly creepy.
It's not quite as bad when it's used to supplement a description. It just shouldn't ever take the place of an actual description where writing is the whole point in the first place.

wait so
Your character is from a comic, so I assume there's pictures of them from the comic itself, right? So why are you using a "FC" for them instead of like, actually a picture of the character that is meant to be that character? Like Kai said, I also think using pictures of real people for pretendy funtime RP is a little weird and I prefer kawaii animu art theft to using a picture of Johnny Depp or whoever and everyone takes it seriously for some reason.
If you have a written description then you don't really NEED an image to go with it, but then again if this is a canon character and everyone in the fandom knows what they look like then writing it out would just be redundant and uuuh
This ask kind of confuses me.
- Cos
This might be on the subject of playbys, but it makes me want to face palm, when someone just has to link to a picture of their character's outfit. Look, I know what a black tube top looks like, you dont need to scroll though tons of fashion sites to fine the perfect one. Rp is writen media, you should be able to describe everyone's clothes using just words. That and it also get into the whole "I don't care how pretty your character looks, I want to know their personality" thing.
You know what's crazy? I used to see people do that way back in my Ayenee days. It's like no one trusts you to have the imagination necessary to picture a goddamn t-shirt in your head.
Like some of my old high school literature teachers would tell me about my overdescription (for which I was extremely notorious), we know. You don't have to spend the extra ten minutes spelling it out for us. Get on with it.
I couldn't agree more. Stop trying so hard to make us like your character and we just might.

CHALLENGE TIME
That's right, I have a challenge for everyone. With the increasing number of sites out there requiring that people use play-bys (a practice which Cos and I both find arbitrary, pointless, and borderline [or downright] creepy), I've got an activity to you lovelies out there following this blog.
I want to see who can make this into a play-by. It can be any kind of play-by you want. Just don't forget to submit it to us when you're done.
THANK YOU, BTW CONGRATS ON YOUR EVERYTHING and i have more questions. are the canon playbys final?
UH CONGRATS ON YOUR EVERYTHING. Seriously go kiss your parents because those are some sexy genes. It really depends on the canon. The senior officer canon play-bys are non-negotiable. These canon faces include: Alex Kingston, Armie Hammer, Ginnifer Goodwin, Imogen Poots, Tom Hiddleston, and Jude Law. On top of those, there are two minor canon faces that we'd rather you don't change, those faces being Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Fassbender, and Elijah Wood. The other ones aren't final, and can be changed with admin approval. This will probably make more sense when all our canons up. But most canon faces are non-negotiable because we're shallow people and we think they're attractive. We'll add a note that the face claims are negotiable on the ones you can change. Yup yup.
Who wants to help Victoria cast play-bys?
I'm looking for:
A small, sweet looking asian girl (sophomore)
A sweet, mousy kind of girl who would look good with Amanda Bynes (sophomore)
A 'meat-headed' but good-looking football play type akin to Cory Monteith/Finn Hudson (senior)
A glamorous, beautiful, snobby looking african american girl (senior)
Help would be absolutely unbelievably fantastic.
