Playboyy Rewatch - EP. 1 Thoughts
The way that Playboyy establishes exactly what sex and sexuality mean for the characters in ways that are so subtle that you miss them on the first watch because you have no idea what you're looking for is everything to me. The writers lay out the foundations from EP. 1 but we're utterly clueless about where the story is headed. They bait you into thinking it's going to be a simple story about naive college kids and the big bad sex workers who are going to take advantage of them and that couldn't be farther from the truth! It's a clever way to drive the narrative, playing on the audiences preconceived notions. We learn a lot about Zouey, First, Jump, and Teena that plays into their behavior later on but you have to truly pay attention. Zouey expresses a clear interest in sex but we get hints immediately that he's more interested in giving rather than receiving. Of course, I didn't catch on the first time I watched the show. I assumed Zouey was simply inexperienced and scared. And fear is certainly there but it's not a fear of sex! It's a disinterest in having sex the way the world (and us as the viewer) assume he should want it. A fear that what he wants won't be accepted. Too many people wrote the show off immediately because "ew sex" like OPEN YOUR THIRD EYE. I BEG. WHAT DOES THE SEX MEAN!?
I'm still crazy about Nont crashing into the Baddies house like "hey, what's up, it's your good friend Nant. I know I've been gone for a few months but I'm back and I smoke now because I'm cool. Also, Porsche, fuck you and your dead mom. Anyway, I'm totally normal!"
First and Soong openly talking about how they both enjoy rough sex and how neither of them have ever found someone who understands that <3. The blowjob scene of all time!!! Like honestly what a banger way to have these two characters meet for the first time.
Captain being a little shithead from EP. 1 <3. My guy had to grow on me initially but now that I know where his storyline is headed, I'm eager to pay closer attention and see what other gremlin moments I might've missed.
Porsche being so hidden in the background, intentionally kept in the dark, with the knowledge of why that is this time around....I'm already sobbing, weeping, throwing up.
Everyone feeling some sort of guilt surrounding Nant's disappearance also hits so much harder when you recognize that all of them did have some part to play in what happened. Also, the fact that Nant is an enigma that we don't ever fully know or understand T_T. I was utterly devastated after my first watch because I was so certain we'd get to know who Nant was but no, of course we can't, because Nant is gone and everyone else only knew him in fragments. Couple that with the guilt and shame that's warping everyone's memories and we will never know who Nant actually was. Once again, I WEEP. I CRY.
Honorary quick mention to the set design and intentional stylization of the show. I've talked about it before but it's still so good. The Zouey/Teena bathroom scene with the golden light streaming in. The art studio. Nant's bedroom. Chef's kiss.

RIP to everyone else but these hosts really loved Playboyy! Awkward~
So like any good defense attorney on a USA or NBC show we had to sit down and bang that gavel in defense of one of our fave shows of 2024.
So listen up and in as we breakdown the fandom reaction, our thoughts and more cause it's us vs the people in this episode of Part 5 of 4!
the real winner of seven minutes in heaven is captain, who both played the game correctly and successfully interrogated his target
Bringing another microdose of "things -I-(just)-realized-again" in EP 01 of Playboyy S01 because we have a whole week for the rewatch and I am using it. So if you hope for peace and silence: 💫suffer💫 because I can't shut up XD
Who is it about?
Our beloved Zouey!
(This is the point where I spoil the whole season)
Zouey in this episode is another level if we consider what we know about the whole shit that hit the fan. Holy fuck, Korn acted his ass off because I really interpreted Zoueys reactions in complete different ways than I do now. And it still makes sense, so he left room for different views, just... the mind of the writers and acting coaches...
Anyway, what I am talking about:
We see Zouey still stalking Nants facebook, as if he would return suddently. And we know what role Zouey had in the whole dissapearing circle. He knew where Nant was at first. And he feels all the guilt that comes with it. Evidence a, the drawing of the baddie bunch on the table.
Zouey sees himself as guilty but he doesn't want to. This feeling is horrible, it haunts him for 1 whole year already, it is enough!
But how to work with such a guilt? Well... he is the only one who knows what happened. He and Nant, who isn't there to sing the tale. So how to avoid this choking feeling of his own wrongs?
Easy:
We shift the blame to these, who don't know the full story.
I am not saying, that Captain, First and Porsche are innocent. They are partly at fault too, which will unfold in the series. And this is what makes it so easy for Zouey.
He can just lie. Lie to himself and the others. Because they are at fault, what they did brought Nant to the point where he was. So they are to blame, right? They are at fault too and maybe, maybe even a tiny bit more than Zouey himself.
They know that as well, we see it in Captains reactions and also in his face at the last picture.
There is no smile, no dramatic sigh or mocking tune. Captain knows what he did and he has someone who tells him that it is his fault. He can't hide from it.
He tries to avoid the guilt as well as Zouey but with this they return to point 0, where the blame just starts to take turns with everyone, fueled by Zouey's tries to push the guilt he feels away.
And that's how we got this picture:
We see the shock, surprise and confusion of First, Captain and Porsche but Zouey doesn't seem to share this.
He freezes up. Because all he can see is Nant, the only other witness to his wrong doings. The one who can expose all the blame he shifted and directed from himself at the others.
So the tiny prick of fear drips into this scene, shining through the shock and gifting us AGAIN a multi- layered character, who is confronted with the threat of exposion and guilt.
And oh, fear is a terrible advisor.
