What is a Redundant Power Supply and How Does It Work?

The electrical components inside enclosures that house industrial automation systems like PLCs often operate on a 24 volt power supply. So in these enclosures we usually need one or several power supplies that each have a 24 volt output voltage. But in some applications where ultra-reliability is essential, and an unexpected loss of power would be disastrous we need to use “redundant power supplies”.   In this video we’re going to learn exactly how these types of power supplies work from a practical perspective.

STAR-DELTA STARTER PLC PROGRAM AND WIRING _ PART 4

In a previous lesson you learned that there are a bunch of copper windings within every electrical motor that when you connect electricity to them, the motor is going to be turned on.

To make things easier I told you that we label these windings with three simple symbols. These symbols have six ends. The upper ends are shown by U1, V1 and W1 and the lower ends are shown by U2, V2, and W2. The same number of winding ends exist on a terminal box on any typical 3 phase electrical motor. You can use these terminals to connect power to the motor, run with star-delta starter wiring or reverse direction.  In this lesson you’re going to learn where these terminals are and how to reach them.

The basic concept of star-delta starter is to first run the motor in the star connection for a few seconds to reduce the start current. Then when the motor has gained sufficient speed, change the winding connections to delta.

This is the second video from the “star-delta starter PLC program and wiring” video series. As I stated, my aim is to make this an easy to follow and enjoyable training experience so before diving into the wiring of a star-delta starter, I’d like to teach you a little bit about what a contactor is and how it actually works.

In this video, using a simple and effective animation, you are going to learn what the main parts of a contactor are and how it can help you to turn on and off the industrial equipment.
