At five in the morning it is already close to thirty degrees - merciless summer days made even more torturous by the metal barrack that serves as the debt prisoners' housing.
For a whole year now the group has suffered through eight workshifts per week. They fondly remember the little stone tower they were imprisoned in before this camp, while the time before their sentencing feels like the memory of a fairy tale, something that has never been real.
Poe's phone almost slips through his sweaty fingers when he tries to take an incoming call.
Space Agency employee manager: "Good morning, Mr. Dameron! We are pleased to inform you that starting today you are the CEO of our organisation. We can pay you 3,650 PD plus enrollment in our excellency and seniority programs. A progressively increasing retirement fund is included in the offer. Be sure to sign first thing when you come in today!"
Poe: "CEO? Is that a joke? I'm nineteen years old with a High School diploma!"
Manager: "You'll get competent assistants, don't worry."
Poe: "Okay? So I'm looking at something like 7,500 PD per month? Great!"
Manager: "No, CEO, you misunderstood. That's your DAILY salary."
Everyone got a similar call. From the space agency... Clickworks Industries... the school... the hospital, the clinic and the pharmacy... and all the little stores in town.
All the companies in Melino together could raise the half million still needed for the community center by the end of summer, mid-fall at the latest. There was no need to force eight youths to spend two decades earning the sum cent for cent.
Since the companies of Melino couldn't just gift the money to the convicts, they manipulated their salaries. The court was fuming, but couldn't do anything about it.
Daniel: "They could have done so the first day already! But they let us work by the skin of our teeth for a full year!"
Armitage: "Yeah. But, I mean... Remember the police helicopter you crashed back in Detroit? Or the fire I set to an apartment, that suddenly engulfed five houses?"
Chris: "A year is fair for that."
Daniel: "Maybe. But quite honestly the court's character building forced labor sentence only makes me want to burn down more houses. The people of Melino who reached out to us, though? I'd risk my life for them!"
The apartment fire happened in Sims 4: 1 / 2 / 3 / 4
