So, this just happened. I was talking to my friend when I checked my e-mail and seeing as I had a comment on my most recent fan fic, of course I was excited. I was about to tell her how huge this one is and probably someone really liked the story.
But, then I read the comment and stared at my screen for 5 minutes like, WTF dude?
First of all, I have turned on comment moderation for exactly this reason (because I don't want unwanted content in my comments section). Don't get me wrong, if it's constructive criticism I would approve it, but this was far from that, so I might as well tell you all I deleted it without having qualms about it.
What I want to talk about is the contents of this comment. I know that this person probably wanted to come off as polite and just asking a question for someone to help them out with recs, but let me tell you this, I have over 2k bookmarks on ao3 and they have gone through them and looked up the Johnlock fics I've read and now they ask me this?
First logical thing I'd do if I was going to browse someone's bookmarks would be to open those fic links and read them, because what better recommendation there is than that, right? (Plus I like to have fics I've read in bookmarks so I can go back to them if I want to re-read them).
Now, that this is out of the way, the specific way in what they described their wish to find a certain kind of fics where John is a top that just picks up Sherlock and fucks him roughly, dude, that is not the way to approach someone and ask for fic recs. For all you know it might be a put off for me or something I'm not interested in reading. Next time just ask for social media platform where you can find me and ask me about it if you so want to, but do not come to my comments asking for fic recs and telling me what you want to read, because the chance is either I haven't read anything with the likes you want, or I don't have the time to go through my bookmarks to rec someone's fic.
Third, and this is by far the thing that bothered me the most (along with something else I'll explain in a bit) is that just because they've been through my bookmarks they claim they know I love top!lock more which can't be as far from the truth as it could. True, I read top!lock, yes, I think they switch, and as long as the smut is written well I'll read them both as top and bottom. But, my preference is bottom!lock. How the hell do you know about my preferences from just that, a cursory glance through my bookmarked fics? Please someone explain that to me because I can't do it, can't find a logical explanation for any of this.
Fourth, and certainly not the last, the fic this comment was posted on wasn't a Sherlock fic. I repeat it wasn't a Sherlock fic!!! I have written one, published exactly on December 31st 2019 and it's not this one! This is a 911: Lone Star story I wrote and published recently, so yeah, you are right, this is definitely random question, but not one for my comments section on any of my stories.
I am putting this here for all of the Johnlock writers/readers out there to see, and for everyone else to learn how to not approach a writer and ask them random things that frankly could be that writer's put off, trigger, or God knows what else that can make them uncomfortable.
Sorry for the long rant. Going back to my day now (fending off a headache because I'm pissed off as hell).
