Note: A small fic out of that scene where Melinda is just holding Phil’s arm in the background, right before she hugs Elena. Thanks to @studiocapsicum for freaking out with me when I noticed (while rewatching the episodes) that and for badgering me to write this. Thanks also to the wonderful @samandjackshipper for helping me find the 4x22 quote. It wasn’t beta’d so I apologize for any mistakes I made.
Jemma was taken and she didn’t do anything to help her. Melinda was in despair and she felt completely powerless. Her leg was throbbing, demonstrating how she was physically incapable of saving the young biochemist. But that didn’t bring her any comfort. Her injuries, the lighthouse, this bleak future were all beginning to overwhelm her mind.
Closing her eyes all she could see was the broken shell of the Earth, a reminder of everything that had been lost. A thought she had tried to push away crept back into the forefront; her parents. She didn’t know exactly how or when the Earth was destroyed, but she hoped that her parents did not live to experience it. Her imagination was filled with horrific scenarios, each one more painful than the previous one causing her to lose control over her body; her hands tightened into fists and she felt her heart rate quickening.
Just then, Melinda saw Tess round a corner and walk toward her. Right behind the young woman, she could see Phil. He was safe. She let out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding and felt her body relax. The urge to hobble forward and wrap her arms around him was overwhelming. She fought it, hiding behind the crumbling walls that still protected her heart.
He smiled and his eyes softened when he saw her. She felt like sobbing, the enormity of the loss of the world suddenly weighing heavily on her shoulders. Her mind, body, and soul were tired, exhausted, by everything she had gone through lately and in that moment she wanted nothing more than to bury her head in Phil’s chest and never leave his side again. He was her support, her pillar in times like this, and she was tired of keeping her distance. Of fighting her feelings. No, she could no longer spend that time and energy convincing herself that she wasn’t completely in love with Phil Coulson. His words were still fresh in her mind, “maybe on my end too.” Up until then, she had never allowed herself to dream that he could love her back, but now she didn’t know what to think. He had been so sweet since they came out of the framework that she started to believe that, maybe–just maybe–he had feelings for her.
It didn’t help that his presence was all that kept her whole and sane. He kept her world from unraveling with the revelations that pulled her apart at the seams.
He made his way to her and when he noticed that Jemma was nowhere to be found, he arched his eyebrows in a silent question. She shook her head and nodded toward the hallway they Kree guards had taken. By the time he reached her side, they had already communicated so much without words that they didn’t need to speak right away. It had always been that way with them. Phil reached out his right hand and and began to rub her arm soothingly, a deep sorrow creasing his features. It was as if he could see into her soul, as if he understood everything that plagued her mind.
“Jemma… she tried to save one of the Kree slaves and they took her. I couldn’t help her…” Staring into his concerned eyes, Melinda found herself at a loss for words. He brought both hands to her shoulders and squeezed tenderly. His touch sent shivers down her spine and for one moment, she didn’t care about their boundaries or about Tess’s presence; she stepped forward and buried her face in Phil’s chest. In a heartbeat, she felt his arms tightening around her back, bringing her closer as his chin came to rest on top of her head. Her arms snaked around his midsection, her hands clasping over his lower back. Breathing in his familiar scent, Melinda began to find peace. They’d be okay. They’d get out of this together like they always did.
His presence was always calming to her and she found this to be especially true in that moment. They were stranded in space, in a bleak future where almost everyone they knew was dead and their planet was destroyed, but they were together. Despite all that she had lost, she still had him.
Phil pressed his lips to the crown of her head and she felt his right hand caressing her hair. It was loving and intimate and Melinda felt the last of her walls crumble. She was tired of hiding her feelings. Still, this was not the time nor the place to have that conversation.
Reluctantly, she stepped back and out of his embrace. His hands dropped to his side as if he had been burned, and he looked embarrassed. She smiled and reached out her right hand to squeeze his arm, trying to reassure him. She kept her hand on his arm much longer than necessary, unwilling to break that physical contact while they looked into each other’s eyes in a silent conversation that spoke volumes.
Finally, they saw the rest of the team coming to join them. Melinda stepped back, waiting until the last possible second before letting go of his arm.
No, she didn’t think she could spend another day pretending not to love him.
