Inktober Day 1: Ring
im aware that this is late but i started late so
And then there she was and we were holding hands and the night was young and so were we. She, all of her faux leather, and sometimes glasses sometimes contacts adorned eyes and her hair which was so much better than mine. I remember the day I invited her over, just freshman year and we were so new to everything. We had gone to look at the stars the day before and she told me what I knew I’d wanted to hear since she said hello. Her clear, brown eyes and sturdy hand and as I look at her now I wonder what she saw in me, that girl with the weird hair and the nerdy answers and the somehow still American accent. And I wonder how life would be if we weren’t both Indians and weren’t both high schoolers and weren’t both broken and weren’t both pressured to no end. Would we then, find refuge in each other? I wonder these things but I say not a word for hidden in my hand is a ring and hidden in my pocket is my hand. A ring, one that I plan on showing her and as I look at our linked hands, I see the hands of the most beautiful, most amazing girl to have ever set foot on the planet, and I’m so eternally grateful that she chose me of all people to know the feel of her hands and her hair and her lips. I look to her and say, “Anuhi…your hands look..heavy. Let me hold them. Or would you like them heavier?” and with that I pull out the ring and I swear the stars from all the heavens above shine in her eyes and her lips felt like a soothing winter fire under a scratchy blanket as they press against mine and I pick her up and spin her around and nothing has ever felt this right as this moment. Nothing has ever felt as beautiful as her arms and laughter and no echoing silence because I gave her the ring and she loves it and all she can say is ‘I love you’.
