There once was an angel named Edgar, who was created without a soul for whatever reason. And yet, at the same time, he felt love for the world very strongly-- with the catch that his soullessness made expressing larger intensities of that love physically painful.
At first, he lived his life almost exactly like every other basic AU of himself-- he dealt with Heaven's abuse, then became a guardian angel with a girl named Mara as his beloved charge.
But something felt... off.
He loved Mara, and her friends, and his friends, and Earth, and EVERYTHING. He loved it all so, so dearly. But the pain that came with that love... he couldn't help but wonder if there was a way to heal himself.
He had vaguely heard about other universes, and about the fact that there are other versions of him. And almost all of the others did have souls.
He met another version of himself. He seemed more complex than him, somehow. Figuring he should get straight to the point, he asked the other version of himself if he could have his soul, telling said other self of his pain.
Surprisingly, he accepted, and the two had one final, loving embrace before the latter self became part of the former.
The joy he felt having a soul, being able to express his love without as much pain... it was ineffable.
But it wasn't completely painless, either-- somehow his love was still too strong.
...
Eventually, he had become a collector of sorts. What was once just a way to feel a bit less pain became a stronger, more inhuman goal.
He had become almost eldritch, seeking those other selves of his. They had become puzzle pieces, smaller parts of a greater, absolute whole.
And, whether or not this was truly because of his now enormous amount of souls, he had taken the role of a deity.
But in spite of it all, he kept his love.
He loved his selves, every single one, and did his best to care for them before they became part of him.
He loved his own, singular self as well-- a love that paradoxically grew stronger with every new soul he acquired.
He loved the worlds he created with his newfound power-- both the ones he directly and indirectly made.
He loved every person he had met during his no longer countable years of life.
He loved everything.
He was euphoric.
He was at peace with his existence.
