Kabuki has been my favorite villager for a long time. In fact, he was the first villager I ever saw. The first time I’d heard of Animal Crossing, I was in grade school and my best friend at the time had gotten Wild World when it just came out. She was describing it to me over the phone and I was excited to see the game. When she came over to my house the next day, she told me “All the animals are so cute and nice, you’ll love it!” And as she turned the game on, Kabuki was the villager selected to be wandering around the title screen. “Oh... except for that one. I think he’s a demon.” I asked her to go talk to him and she refused. A week later I had my own copy of Wild World and soon forgot all about Kabuki. A year later I bought a GameCube and a copy of the first game. One of the first villagers I ran into in my new town was Kabuki. About a month later, he moved into my Wild World game. When I bought City Folk when it first came out, who would greet me other than Kabuki. I’d grown very attached to the cranky cat, so much so, that when New Leaf came out, I was heartbroken when he wasn’t in my town. Villagers came and left, but Kabuki never showed up. I had Tom to fill the cranky cat void in my heart, but it wasn’t the same. So now, with New Horizons out, I want to see him again! When I finally get a copy of the game, I will not rest until he’s on my island!
I sketched this back in the beginning of March when I was really excited for the release of New Horizons. I put it aside to work on other projects, but knew I wanted to come back to it and finish it up. I got the background and some basic shapes done in the middle of May, I also changed Kabuki’s clothes to his new yukata, but my hand started acting up again. And then life got in the way. So now a long time later, it’s finally finished!
